Using the waybackmachine internet archive, I just checked and approximately five years ago (1/3/14 snapshot was closest), these were the main-page forum topics on Beer Advocate. Were you around then?

I see a number of the same topics - beer haul, WBAYDN, mentions of BCBS release, etc. This was about 20 months before I joined, though a number of these or their descendants were active when I started in September, 2015.

Remember any of them? How do they compare to the recent topics? Thoughts? Note that unless specifically deleted, these topics can be found on the BA site.

It seems like it was a fun time for the forums! Nothing much had been hashed out ad-nauseum yet, all the current trends (ridiculous and brilliant) were a twinkle in brewers’ eyes. Makes me wish I was active back then!

That time lapse of the open fermentation (bigfoot IIRC) is still one of my favorite beer related videos. All that yeast!

Actually...yeah. There were plenty of topics being hashed out repeatedly.

Just off the top of my head, some I recall included:
    • Best beer on a budget
    • if you could only drink one beer
    • best lawnmower beer
    • does (seasonal release) taste different this year?
    • my beer got hot/cold is it still good?
I'm sure there were other ever-recurring threads, but I'm not going to sit here for the next hour trying to recall them.

I suspect there were some IBU war discussions though. Mikeller 1K ibu and palate wrecker were just losing their appeal around that time.

I always like taking a trip in thewaybackmachine. I was largely still lurking but registered at the time. I remember the forums were rather contentious at the time, got off track very easily, at least it seemed that way to me. Discussions these days are more polite and respectful.

    Very interesting! Awesome thread.

I had just about started drinking in 2014 (late bloomer), and was exploring beer with my dad. I didn't even know what BCBS stout was, let alone how rare it was (or how rude people can be when asked to trade for it). That would all come for me about a year later.

Close to 100 years ago this site would have been illegal (right?), or at the very least, admittance of consumption would be illegal, due to Prohibition. Wild to think about how laws and social acceptance change over time.

    I'll drink to that.

100 years ago there was a website like this, or the equivalent of it's day. As National Prohibition began homebrewers set up their own networks and exchanged recipes through the mail. Also former wine growers in California started shipping train boxcars full of raisins East along with a written caution, "do not add water and yeast to this product or it may turn into an alcoholic beverage".

Ha Ha! I made that video. I'm glad it still lives-on in infamy. That particular round of Bigfoot was fermenting over Christmas, and my wife was less-than-enthused that I had to go to the brewery every 4 hours or so to change batteries and check on the progress.

Nice thread. I had just been on BA for about one year. Just a rookie and still in the "got to find whales" phase and learning more about craft beer (after living through the microbeer phase in the late 80s and 90s).

Unfortunately, while I sure it was similar back then, I see too many of the same threads. Both a good and bad thing. Good that I have learned so much and experiences some great beers and breweries. Bad in that there is not a lot of new/interesting stuff on BA as in the past. Probably just me.
