We see "what's the next big thing" threads pop up on here all the time (God knows I've participated in my share), however, we never really see follow-ups to see what predictions people got right, and what was way off the mark.

Care to share what predictions you made in the past, what you got right, and what you got wrong?

My Prediction: Saisons would become the next popular style

Personally, I remember predicting that Saisons would be the next big thing, and in the last year, we've seen new year-round releases from popular breweries like Stone Saison and Allagash Saison, to name a few.

While I won't argue with you in that saisons certainly APPEAR to be quite popular, I'm not so sure you got this one right. At the time, what was the most popular style? Are they the NEXT popular style? Because at the moment I would say "session IPA" or maybe even IPLs are the next popular style(s). For example, Founders best seller is currently All Day IPA.

I know American Pale Ales used to be the best selling craft beer style before the IPA.

Edit: All apologies, a quick check of some popular styles shows there's 2800 Saisons in the database. Only the most popular styles have more (double and single IPAs, American Pale Ale, and the American Double/Russian Imperial Stout). It appears by those metrics you were spot on.

As for my prediction....probably deep within the forums maybe four years ago you could find me predicting more sessionable beers would increase in popularity due to beer being a drink based on volume. Again, like my post above eludes to, I can't really prove this with numbers off hand.

I agree that Session IPAs were probably the "next" big style to hit from the major breweries, or perhaps simultaneously with Saisons. Your metrics aren't able to measure for that, since Session IPA doesn't get it's own page on BA.

That being said, when I predicted that Saison's would be the "next" big thing, i mostly meant that they would "soon" become a popular, well-distributed style.

Mine's more about my personal beer habits than any big nationwide trends.

After trying a lot of beers from across the country and doing a fair amount of trading and whale hunting in 2011-12, I predicted that I would dial back my search for the most hyped, sought-after beers from other regions and start drinking more local beers. That one proved to be correct; most of what I drink now is from Washington, Oregon, and California (plus Beligum of course).

My other prediction was that I would manage to drink down my cellar to a respectable 100 or so bottles by the end of 2013. That one proved to be way the hell off; cellar now hovers at about 340, where it's been for at least a year.

Maybe you're being facetious here, but I gotta' ask if you've had All Day IPA? It has plenty of flavor. Try it if you haven't yet. Great summer beer (or a year-round session beer).

New to the site so no old predictions. Watch for Deep Ellum Brewing Company from Dallas, though.

They've had a very respectable IPA offering. Their Porter, Double Brown Stout is good, and they've had some serious rotational beers (Four Swords, Numb Comfort, Darkest Hour) and have just started canning what used to be a rye IPA, now a double, Dream Crusher. Their new-ish brew master is formerly of Dogfish head so:
    1) he's known and has had mass success at a staple in craft brewing before coming to DEBC, and
    2) I envision him working too improve upon existing brews (already done in remaking Dream Crusher) and work to create new releases ( already done with a cherry chocolate variant of DBS).

Don't mean to hi jack the thread...as I'm likely just a homer and way off here anyway :astonished:

Okay, this thread is all about what predictions came true. So, in the spirit of preserving this thread's spirit a couple years from now (and because I never really made a bold prediction in the first place), I want someone out there to remember this post for future reference:

About a year or two from the time they open up this summer, Calvert Brewing Company is going to become Maryland's 'it' brewery. Give it some time, and some of their BA brews will trade for the likes of HT, CC brews, and Prairie Bomb!; while the regulars will go for other good regulars unavailable in MD. Thanks to the moderate hype from Calvert, there will be a minor increase in hype for other MD breweries (Evolution...and that's about it; there's a reason I didn't mention FD/Heavy Seas/DuClaw :stuck_out_tongue:). It'll also - and this is the most important point - make Calvert/Evolution brews harder to get for myself.

Outlandish prediction? Maybe. An overly ambitious thing to say? Yeah. But humanity never accomplished jack squattery without outlandish ambition.

In honor of the thread being changed to predicting the future I will play along. Green Flash will change their labels within one year from today's date. The new labels are hideous.

I cannot remember too many, but It is to soon to tell if the only prediction I made in writing on this board come true or not.

Still fairly sure 99% of mine are made while drinking so they are not worth much.:grinning::grinning:

oh oh I remember 1, I stupidly said that IPA's was a fad, boy still wrong on that 1.:grimacing::grimacing:

    Woke up remembering two more:

    1) Goose Island wouldn't suck after ownership change. In fact, I think you can argue (in another thread) that things have gotten better for the consumer.

    2) Sour beers would become the next wildly popular brew for beer geeks to fawn over.

That BMC would come out with bourbon-barrel/flavored offerings.

That despite all the calls for it, mild will *never* catch on as a favorite among U.S. beer geeks.
