I am going to Italy for 2 weeks in mid-April and have read a little about their beer scene. I have also read about some Italian Sours.
Does anybody have some recommendations for beer bars, breweries, and bottle shops to check out in each area? I'll also have some time over the weekend and can take a train to nearby regions if needed.

Panil Barriquee Sour is great, and quite sour. On the stronger side for sours, 8% I think, and has a little sweetness, but is great. Reminds me a little bit of this one http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/47/5357
They're in Parma, which isn't that far of a trip from Milan. Probably an hour train ride, or less. You might be able to find it in a good bottle shop though.
I can't give you any specifics about where to go in Milan or Torino, I don't know those cities very well. Toccalmatto is an hour or so outside of Milan, and they make fantastic beers. http://www.birratoccalmatto.it/Default.aspx
Birrificio del Ducato is near Toccalmatto, and they make great beers as well. http://www.birrificiodelducato.net/
Just be prepared to pay, Italian beer is pricey.

Go to Rome. I had one of the best beer experiences of life there this past week. I can't wait to go back. Beer mail me if you want details, and I'll put you in contact with some awesome folks.

Thanks all! Sounds like I am off to a good start! WCBL, I will contact you if I have the chance to get to Rome - although I should no matter what it appears.

Old thread but it helps as I'm doing some research. For some reason I can't BM but I'd also appreciate some details. Going to Rome as part of a 10 day trip through Italy next month and I'm hoping to get some beer in!

In a couple months, the wife and I will be driving from Austria to France through northern Itally. (Verona, Milan, Turin, etc.) Anyone know of any great pit stops where I should pick up a few bottles? Anything that hasn't already been mentioned? Maybe we'll spend a night someplace along the way and we could hit some brewpubs. Doubt that the wife will go for much a detour south of the highway just to go get beer.

I recently found out that Baladin has an Inn near their brewery, which is outside of Torino (not sure of exact geography). The place looks awesome, if you're looking to spend a night somewhere, could be pretty cool. I'm hoping to squeeze in a night there next time I'm in the Beautiful Country.

Shoot! I wish I would have seen this a week ago. We already booked this place in Torino:

I suppose it's probably for the best. The hotel we booked is really very central and has good rates. Plus we are traveling with a dog, and chances are that they wouldn't want a dog staying in their rooms. I had a hard time finding dog friendly hotels in Itally. In Austria and Germany it isn't a problem at all.

Oh but I am still looking for tips for anything in northern Itally along the A4 highway. We leave on the 28th of this month.
We will be staying the night in Udine, Verona and Torino.
