Would it be possible to go and pick up a cable car still? Any tips if it is indeed possible? Anything else awesome they carry that I wouldn't be able to pick up at a really good bottle shop?

To go? No. Their bottle list is completely unpredictable, sometimes there are some good things on there, all but CC usually available to go.

Thanks. That's what I figured. But I heard it was available sometimes, wasnt sure if it to go or for on site consumption.

It's supposed to be available on-premise almost all the time, but it's very hit and miss. Just ask for the current bottle list when you arrive. If Cable Car isn't on it, you're probably not getting it.

They will sometimes have other rarities on there, but it's usually only fairly normal stuff to-go. Though they have a lot of Abyss.

Rather than make a whole new thread for my own question, does anyone know if Toronado SD has the 25th anniversary on their bottle list at all? I'll be there in a few weeks and figured I'd check in to see if I should bother getting my hopes up.

Hey resurrecting an old thread with almost the same question. Is Cable Car continuously replenished or is there just one massive allotment? I'm going to be in San Francisco in June and wondering what my chance of trying CC is. Been on my list fo a long time and really hoping to scratch it off!

The allotment isn't massive. But there is only one, which they periodically pull out of the cellar at various times. It's never certain, but Toronado is worth going to anyway. Sit at the bar, bring cash, know what you want before your order (or ask for a recommendation between two choices), and ask to see the bottle list after two or three rounds. If Cable Car is on the list, order it. If not, ask if they have it available at the moment.

The last few times I've asked, there's been no Cable Car. When the next case will get pulled out of the basement, who can say?

This is exactly what I did in the past few times. CC was never on the bottle list... I need more beer karma and luck.

I think we need to send a fellow BA in to infiltrate the system (aka start working there) so he can hook us brothas up.

Yeah I hear people who work in the industry love having beer nerds constantly asking them for rare beers.

Was there a couple of weeks ago, picked up a CC to go. Just have to be there at the right time and have the right person.

Probably depends largely on who you happen to draw as your bartender. If you get Paulie, for instance, he'll probably berate you for bringing in your own bottle, confiscate it, and you still won't have any Cable Car. :p

Haha,I thought about that possibility. I'm sure I'll still enjoy San Fran even if I don't get to try CC.

Don't worry AP, I've found 'Frisco residents to be very tolerant towards non-natives these days. Amazing how winning a couple of World Series will loosen the collective sphincter.

As a Bay Area native who has lived in SF for going on 2 years, I am regularly chastised at my neighborhood bar for not growing up in the specific neighborhood where I now live.

Most of the bartenders aren't beer nerds/traders and don't really care how rare or out-of-state a beer is. If they happen to really like it, then great, but they'll probably just say, "that's pretty good." You might have better luck bribing them with home-grown weed...

I was flying back from central america this past weekend and was reading the inflight magazine (Taca Airlines). They had an article on things to do and see in San Francisco and one of the suggestions was to "grab a beer at the Toronado on the Haight" - I couldn't help but laugh trying to picture a central american tourist wandering in there and ordering "something light"

Look like you're not from SF (no hipster clothing, facial hair, or metal shirts). Ask to see the bottle list right when you walk in. Get the bartender's attention, and then be very undecided. They love that stuff. Even if you were to spend a million dollars in their establishment that night, they don't care. They're too cool to care. They have an image to uphold. Oh, and make sure you use the lovely lavatory while there.

It is a bar, that serves beer. Get over your sensitives and go find some cheer at Applebee's where they wear flair.

I probably could have Haiku'ed that.

Do people really think DovaliHops is being literal? I guess this explains why you see people with brand-new, still-creased Metallica shirts at the Toronado every so often.

    Bonus: Load era.

This is pretty spot on regarding the greenery and bartenders not caring about beers from out of state. They're extremely content to pretty much just drink Blind Pig all day ever day. A few years ago when we brought in a Melange 3, a Brute, and some really old KBS to share Stu and Tad were super appreciative and enjoyed all of them.

I was there last night, and not a single negative thing I've heard about the place materialized.

-Both bartenders I dealt with were very friendly and polite. I tipped well, didn't hesitate on my orders, and was courteous. Honestly some of the best service I've encountered.

-When I asked for the bottle list it was given to me politely without any of the attitude many claim to have received.

-Cable Car Kriek was on the bottle list, I asked about it, and it was offered to me for sale with no hesitation. I was given the option to keep the bottle or the cork, took the bottle. FYI, on the bottle list it says it's a 375ml but it's actually a 750.

-The bar itself was clean, not crowded, and had a good atmosphere. The bouncers were great with regards to us going in and out for food. Music was loud but not overly so, where we were sitting we could talk without shouting.

-Row 2, Hill 56 was on draft.

All in all I was really happy with the trip and would do it again next chance I get.

Are you sure you're talking about the Toronado?

Toronado on Haight Street in San Francisco?

    In California?
