A buddy of mine has a few 4 packs of 2002 Old Stock Ale. He asked me to check on the value (if any) for him. Cheers
I know you guys don't like "what's my beer worth threads" so I'll tell you I'm posting for a buddy to deflect.
Without evidence of proper cellaring, not a whole lot. 10 years is a very long time to risk chancing that it was kept in a warm 75 degree closet. Your buddy not even having a BA account certainly doesn't make one feel any better about the potential storage conditions...
he received it from an old boss that owned a liquor store. I have no clue on the cellering conditions outside of that. I find the backlash of people assuming this to be my beer amusing.
If you find it amusing, then you haven't paid attention to these forums very long. Many people who say "for a friend" really mean themselves. It has just become a popular term to use to setup a shield because the forum generally frowns upon questions of beer "value". Anyway, stores don't usually have good cellars for aging, so that beer is probably turned by now. It's definitely worth trying a pair of bottles.
Some people have seen threads like this before ( many times ) especially when the beer for trade is of questionable quality or the trade request itself is unreasonable. This is the first case. People do not like backlash on trades like this, so the "non-BA friend" takes the heat off the OP. You also see "no threadshitting" or "BM comments only" alternatively in posts like that. Whether that is the case or not here, it happens a lot hence some of the comments. Damn cbeer, beat me to it man
Holy crap...I just realized that was you. The Dude to Little Buddy? My heart is sad. Tempted to call that a Dick Move.
This is the only pertinent info to help you get an answer to the question in OP. My opinion is I wouldn't trade anything for it with unknown cellaring. If I were you, I would drink one, and if it is still good, post in ISO with what you would like to get in return, and magically your answer will be delivered by if you get offers or not. I would think it would be okay to do $4$ based on today's cost of Old Stock.
