I'm new to the idea of craft beer collecting and trading, and it seems most obvious to start searching my local area, but I seem to be coming up short. I live on Long Island and there seems to be somewhat of a craft beer explosion here. To the island's credit, There are new breweries opening every year with some pretty tasty offerings, which is awesome for a local drinker but not so much for a trader. No one has heard of any of the stuff and fledgling breweries are trying to be innovative yet still make money, so they aren't devoting time to making really big beers that seem to dominate the trade market. As I continue to increase my trade experience I think I will Start throwing in some local extras to increase awareness. But getting back to my original point, I can't seem to find anything local that people want to trade for, the best I can do is try to chase releases from Founders, or goose island, and pray that we get some west coast limited stuff which we rarely do and if so I don't have the time or patience to search for it. Or chase trucks. Any thoughts? Or anyone know any trade worthy beer near me?

I would start by trading your locals for locals from other parts.of.the country, establish some relationships with other traders who down the line you can with for more limited things from their areas

We don't have tons of ammunition on Long Island. You need to get your hands on Founders stuff or chase the rarer beers. Barrier occasionally bottles some stuff that would be good trade bait. Also, stuff from Maine Beer company has good trade value.

Thanks, I pretty much came to the same conclusions. Fortunately the beer future of Long Island is bright!

I think the keys to getting into the hobby and time and energy. You are going to be hard pressed to find traders for most things you want by simply going to the local beer store on any given day. For us on LI, things like Bourbon County, KBS, and Mexican Cake will provide good trade bait but only to a degree. If you want to get Three Floyds, Russian River, Alpine, Jester King, Cigar City, etc., you need to go seek out and put time into getting beers that have a similar trade value. I don't necessarily agree with where things are at with respect to trade values on this site but it is what is it is. You live in NY so can travel for NEBCO, Jack's Abby, Trillium, Tree House, Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, and Lawson's which are some of the most valued beers on BA. I have had great experiences on trades but has been primarily because of my trips up to VT/MA/CT that have landed me the goods to get in the game. Good luck.

the NYC metro area has great distribution but not a TON for people who want to trade. I mean, who drinks beer anyway? :stuck_out_tongue:

srs though, our proximity to so many great beer areas and hot/up & coming breweries means with a little time put in, you can triple or even quadruple the types of beers you can offer up
