You don't have to be offensive. I'm talking about sports being suspended, no live audiences or public events, even in an election year, that is a pretty big deal and I'm being very realistic. The WHO site itself says to stay socially distant from people who are coughing and sneezing, not every single human being. If grocery stores are still open then what gives? Everyone is touching products on the shelf, you check out with a cashier unless you use a self checkout and then touch a screen that a hundred people before you touched... It's fine to stay cautious and still admit to a little personal overreaction sometimes. Not everyone is going about this the same way.

Every single grocery store near me has hand sanitizer all over the place, cleans all touch screens over and over during the day, has ended all food bars, won't use anything that's not single serving, and various other mitigation steps to prevent spread. They all also released public statements about all the things they are doing days ago, with concrete policies in place to keep the risk as low as possible. Your local stores probably also have.

Grocery stores and pharmacies pretty much have to stay open. Nothing else does. You also don't hang out for long periods interacting with people in these places. You get your stuff and leave, using the hand sanitizer on the way in and the way out.

As for the part about people coughing and sneezing being the ones you have to worry about, consider the Biogen conference, where our local outbreak started. Nobody even had any symptoms or felt anything at all until days AFTER the conference ended, but there's 70 confirmed cases that came out of it in MA alone, not to mention related cases from the conference in Tennessee, North Carolina, Indiana, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Norway, and suspected cases in Germany, Austria, and Argentina. When you allow groups of any sort, it only takes 1 to ruin it for potentially thousands of people down the line. That's not an exaggeration, either.

 

Hope so. There are a lot of people who still have to take the T into the city every day and go to work in the public interacting with customers and other people. We can't all stay isolated right now until they call everything off.

How hard is it to understand that you can feel healthy for up to 2 weeks while still spreading this virus. The more people don’t congregate in crowded spaces (TAPROOMS) the more chance we have to slow this thing down. Stay home if it’s not necessary, your taproom experience will still be there when this is over.

I have read a lot about this disease and I understand the situation as we know it. I really don’t give a shit about going to a taproom right now. Besides hanging out with a close friend yesterday I’ve pretty much been staying home and inside when I’m not forced out into the city to work. I have no choice to stay home until I’m told I need to. I’m not being selfish, I’m actually thinking about others. With your good intentions you actually seem like the real selfish one, caring so much about your own self and not businesses employees or people that still want to have a life. If a business is open then you are allowed in it. Keep your stupid ass home if you’re afraid of getting sick.

 

soon you’ll realize these precautions taken by businesses is foolhardy. While it sucks for restos and bars, breweries, whatever, the best course of action is to close, unfortunately. Taking care of yourself can take care of others. Social distancing should be taken seriously. If it’s at the expense of a business over a life and or lives, that’s a no brainer. I’m sure those business would agree if it impacts them and or their customers by staying open.

I hate to pile on here, but please, anyone reading this shit, ignore it. I'm currently in a lockdown in Madrid as of last night. It will last 15 days and will certainly go on longer. I have good friends living in Milan who have been in a similar situation going on 3 weeks now. The issue as many have said is not whether you will get sick - and you may be infected without even really feeling it, it's who you pass it on to. And how many.

All of this shit about "if you feel a bit sick, stay away" is proof that most in the States (as we didn't in Spain and in Italy) don't get it. It takes 5+ days for symptoms to show up and you're likely contagious that whole time. If you're healthy and under 60, chances are the symptoms will be light, but that's not guaranteed. The very act of going to a public space is a public endangerment. This is not an exaggeration. I hate to say this, but the attitude expressed by StoutElk was common here. And now only pharmacies and grocery stores are open. Police patrol the streets handing out fines and jailtime to those who break the quarantine. I'm lucky -- I have a salary and a grocery store I can walk to. People are let in on a person-by-person basis to keep numbers in the store way down (far lower than Trillium's ridiculous plan) and the others wait outside 2 meters apart down the sidewalk. There's plenty of food and there will be. It's just getting to it.

Then there's the issue of small-business owners and everyone else dependent on the capitalist system for income. It's going to be rough. And it's going to last SO MUCH LONGER because all those people (of which I was one for a bit) sauntered around and perhaps unwittingly passed the virus around.

In Spain today the amount of deaths doubled. As much fun as it is to back to 11th grade Pre-cal, look up those exponential curve graphs.

Anyway, I've probably violated some posting code of conduct here, and I'll stop. But please, one last request, don't listen to people that say it's the flu, or stay home if your sick, or support local business. Yes, there is some truth to some of those statements, but they miss the point. The point is that you being around others makes the likelihood that this virus passes to more people far higher. That's the problem. Look at Italy, look at Spain, and soon you'll be able to look at France, the UK, and other states that delayed lockdowns. Don't wait for the state, be smart.

And have a few beers I suppose...

 

I agree with all of that. I’m not on the side of money over safety, I’m just realizing it’s a difficult situation and despite people saying everyone should stay home there is still certainly a lot of people out. I don’t think that’s a good thing, just a fact.

You’ve taken almost everything I’ve said out of context. I’m on the side of safety trust me, just trying to be realistic here. Not everyone is at home, nor can everyone be. Even with people sheltered indoors we need police and military and health workers and essentials in this time. Not everyone will be self-isolated.

 

I respect all of this sentiment. I have seen this get worse quickly in Europe and other countries. I know this isn’t something to take lightly. I know that a young person who may not look or feel sick could be passing this on to elderly and vulnerable people who get worse symptoms. I wish we had a slightly more European model to all of this instead of the American way of putting profits ahead of everything. Sure it’s easy to tell trillium to close down, but what about all the other businesses? This isn’t an outlier here, most businesses have remained open until a further lockdown by the city or state. I agree that we should all stay isolated and stop going out even though businesses are running, but part of that ‘we’ is people working at those businesses who would probably have to forfeit a job and paycheck if they tell their boss they don’t want to work for a month. Most European countries have a more (bad word) “socialist” system where healthcare is universal and most employees are taken better care of. Most people here in the states who don’t have the luxury of working from home are working just to make ends meet, sometimes paycheck to paycheck, sometimes without healthcare because they can’t afford insurance. Now that our federal government is actually considering temporarily extending paid leave, sick leave and unemployment for those in this time, then we might actually be able to do a China or Europe style lockdown. Until workers and small businesses know that their losses of income will be made up for, its hard to see everybody closing down shop, a sad reality. Money rules us all, and you’d think there would be enough rich people with extra millions and billions that could be helping our communities in this time. Maybe in the future we will be better prepared for this scenario. For now I’m waiting for my state or city to shutter businesses and tell everyone to stay home for a while and reimburse our pays. I would be totally fine with that, but our governments haven’t seem to come to that point yet, and who else do the people have to listen to if it’s not our boss or our government leaders? Capitalism kills.

 

Governor just announced Massachusetts restaurants and bars are takeout only until 4/17...so I guess this does ruin Trilliums birthday...

 

Point still stands but the date was clarified to April 6th subject to extension. Everything is essentially closed for 3 weeks starting Tuesday.

 

It’s a step forward for safety, I’m just wondering what happens to all the waiters/servers and bartenders now. How many takeout people does a restaurant need at once?

 

Restaurants that can continue to pay people do, others lay off their staff. It’s a very unfortunate side effect of this. That’s why there’s likely going to be major stimulus/bail out packages coming down and there’s a strong chance that mortgage payments will need to be frozen. Then our stock market will continue to tumble. We’re not getting off easy here but hopefully we can minimize the fatality rate of this.

 

The trill double barrel is Cuvee- wine and bourbon. Thoughts?

Hmmm, I like the black and gold label but the beer doesn’t seem too different. I expect fresh bourbon barrel taste, but the original was already bourbon and red wine barrel aged I thought. Was hoping for a stout or clean beer like Barleywine or strong ale at least, but their cuvée is one of my favorites, almost like a good natural Cabernet red wine. I am a bit surprised that the 4pk didn’t seem to make it on time. I wonder if they halted all production and/or canning.

With the port barrel stout coming out I was hoping for a port and bourbon barrel aged stout, or something similar. A bit of an upset, but the rumors here were the second bottle was cuvée.

 

Very pleased it’s not a stout, now I can feel quite pleased about not buying a ticket.

 

This might be a dumb question but what is the difference between a cuvée of wild ales aged in wine and bourbon barrels and a barley wine aged in wine and bourbon barrels?

 

The wild ale should have wild or sour yeast, and a typical Barleywine would be a malty strong ale that isn’t sour. A cuvée is usually a blend of beers, sometimes the best barrels from a batch.

I’m wondering what the difference is between a wild ale cuvée aged in red wine and bourbon barrels, and a wild ale cuvée aged in red wine and bourbon barrels, and then aged again in fresh bourbon barrels. Obviously fresh bourbon and those notes would be expected, just doesn’t seem like a hugely different beer here.

I don't know what SnugTeam's situation was but I imagine they were getting stuff to go and leaving versus hanging around and potentially increasing the number of people who can get exposed to the virus. There is a distinction between those two scenarios. If they were doing the latter, yes, they should be ridiculed and mocked for it. The former isn't ideal either, but we still have to make do in this cautious era.

It is still a nice service that would reduce buyers effort a lot. If you split it with one or two neighbors it could really work out.

 

It’s felt like trillium has been a step behind at every stage of this. Granted it’s uncharted territory, but it seems like every first attempt to adapt to these times has fallen flat. They cancel the anniversary event but say you can still get your beer fix at the bar (and they offer a super restrictive window for pickup for special beers, again, creating crowds rather than dispersing). Their next announcement is to move to plastic cups only and credit only...with no changes to pickup window. Then they finally relent and shutdown taps, and extend the pickup window. Feels like the same cadence with this delivery. Just temporarily partner with drizzly or show some local beer shops some love. Or just don’t deliver. 2 cases....

 

Mmmm yes, yes this is good. Or maybe throw a party with all that beer. Let’s incentivize people to make choices that bring them into contact with others. More contact.
