Was mentioned in the newsletter a few weeks ago, but looks like it is official:

RT @upland_chicago: Hello, Chicago! We can't wait to be part of your killer craft beer scene!

I thought there would be more excitement for this. I am really looking forward to their sours coming to the city.

That's wishful thinking, seeing as the sours don't see limited distro currently. While the sour program has increased significantly, we won't see an increase in output for some time, and even then who knows if Upland will abandon its lottery system.

What this REALLY means is their Dragonfly IPA sitting next to Anti-Hero at Binny's.

I don't know why their coming in here with, what we most assume, their regular line-up. People will buy at first because it's new but realize they are all average and then collect dust on the shelves. Upland would be better off sending kegs into Chicago sporadically.

Upland hasn't released their lambics to retail in Indianapolis in at least a year and a half. They won't be coming to Chicago. :slight_frown:

this is exactly what i figured would happen. unfortunately, i think they're going to regret entering our market; i personally think we saturated months ago. i think they'll be able to ride the coattails of the reputation for their sours for a short while, but then they'll enter the great dustbowl known as "that one shelf in the corner" unless their non-sours (which i've never had) are truly phenomenal.

This....and I don't think this is going to go well for Upland to be honest....clouds of shelf dust.

I do think Upland wheat will sell well to the non BA crowd.

I can't drink that Bad Elmer's simply because of the packaging.

point taken, but that only reinforces the fact that upland is going to be fighting an uphill battle. maybe it would have been a better idea to get into some draft accounts to see if they can get a foothold?

Good luck with all that... FFF if they can ever quit bragging to themselves about how great they think their own beer is, they might develop a plan. Somehow though, spotty distribution and so-called cult-status seem to play hand in hand, and the egos get even bigger.

This is why they need to change their lottery system. This attitude of give us all your sours but keep the rest of the stuff that keep your doors open. Then when the sour lottery comes around everyone from across the country can sign up their cat and get a shot at one, where locals were at times left out.
