Dear Chicago beer drinkers and Revolution Brewing fans-

We’d like your input. Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, www.urbanchestnut.com, is very excited to begin offering our beers in the Chicago market in the near future and we are wondering if you will find confusion between Chicago’s well known and well respected Revolution Brewing beers and Urban Chestnut’s “Revolution Series” of beers when you see them on the shelves.

    Here’s the skinny…at present and since we began offering our beers in St. Louis, MO in January of 2011, we’ve had two primary series of beers;

-Our “Revolution Series”- Our contribution to the renaissance of craft beer – brewing artisanal, modern American beers.

    AND

-Our “Reverence Series”- Our celebration of beer’s heritage — brewing classically-crafted, timeless European beer styles.

This brewing philosophy of Beer Divergency is the core of Urban Chestnut.

Dropped in below are some samples of how we currently use “Revolution Series” on our packaging. The ONLY time we plan to use “Revolution Series” in Chicago will be on our labels, 4-packs and case boxes.

Ensuring beer drinkers clearly understand these are two distinct offerings is important to us, and we look forward to your feedback.

    Thank you and Prost!

    Urban Chestnut Brewing Company

Seems like the better idea would be to contact Revolution directly, if you haven't already.

It appears to be quite different from Revolution in terms of packaging, label styles, artwork, etc. Just stay clear of using a fist, but i agree that contacting Rev directly is a good bet to be sure. Can't wait to try your offerings.

It'd be pretty hard to confuse that for a Revolution beer IMHO. When will your beer be here?

Does this strike anyone else as odd? I mean, the account that posted this was created today to solicit feedback on what could be a potential legal dispute which is something that is, frankly, none of our business, all the while reading like a market-entering press release.

So, you are doing a collaboration with Revolution on a series of beers that are going to be distributed in the Chicago area. What's so confusing about that?

Never heard of you. Will likely never buy/drink your beers, either.

    Good luck!

I smell a double tag team steel cage match pitting the team of the "Lawsuit Sniffers" consisting of Urban Chestnut and Tyranena vs "The FIB's" consisting of Revolution and Pipeworks.

P.s. I've been watching a lot of old school wrestling on the WWE network lately.

Thanks for the comments folks, please keep them coming! We realize a change may have to be made, so that's why we're asking...that and we're allergic to steel cages

I don't think the packaging will confuse people between it being an Urban Chestnut beer and a Revolution beer. I think the issue with the term Revolution series is that it could confuse a regular beer customer. I think it is entirely in the realm of possibility that a person would think that the "Revolution series" in Chicago would mean it is a series of beers brewed in collaboration with Revolution.

(That thought took me approximately 30 seconds to think of and type. I don't see why it is so hard to be constructive on a message board. I'm sure that Urban Chestnut has or will also be speaking to Revolution. They're also soliciting the opinion of consumers by posting a message here. I swear some of you are on the lookout with your jimmys just at the ready looking to be rustled. Take a breath or just move on to one of the 1,000+ other threads.)

I don't think you have to worry about beer nerds confusing labels, so you're safe on that side of things. @Vav has raised a good point though, which is that you should probably talk with Revolution about this, especially considering the (somewhat silly) legal battles that go on between breweries over their naming conventions.

How about an Injunction On A Pole match?

I don't think Urban Chestnut Revolution Series is an infringement on Revolution Brewing anymore than Proprietors Bourbon County Brand Stout is an infringement on Firestone Walker's Proprietors Reserve Series.

If I saw the beer on the shelf, I would think it was part of a collaboration series with Revolution. Thus, I think it wold be confusing.

Yeah, this seems like an odd attempt to generate some fodder to stop Rev from taking any trademark action once UC moves into the market. It would seem the more straightforward approach would be to first initiate a conversation with Rev to see if they have an issue with it, and then, if appropriate, gather some information about confusion. But I don't really think a BA thread can do a whole lot to settle the issue.
