Erdinger's got an unusual take- a stronger, maltier hefeweizen brewed for the season. Both of the words Oktoberfest and Hefeweizen appear on the cardboard packaging, but it's not stylistically a Marzen. Not a bad beer for a change of pace.

Yeah i coudl ahve included that, it is indeed a weissbier, but so is the Schmohz, and a few of these aren't true to style, but masquerade as oktoberfests.

Doe's Avery's Kaiser count? Plus I think probably every other brewery one can think of has their own version of an Oktoberfest, so this could take awhile! New one I've tried this year was Jack's Abby Copper Legend Oktoberfest....yummy. Speaking of which, I didn't see Legend Oktoberfest on the list either.

Also remembered one... Heavy Seas Prosit!, Yeah Avery can be counted, certainly not to style.

Schlenkerla marzen. Again not to style, but delicious.

So just about every small brewery and brew pub will have an ofest.

Some maerzens are oak aged probably, anything that you get form an oak cask.

Hmm, I never realized that. That is interesting. I'll have to start paying more attention to the ones I try to see if they are or not.

Came here to say Atom Smasher. It was one of the first craft beers I had, and I still enjoy it quite a bit!

Have you seen this anywhere locally Cross? I saw it 2 years ago, but haven't seen it since. My favorite of the Wiesn style.

Oh yeah, I believe this is retired. Was brought back as the Summer Seasonal in '11, but the Weizen was Cap's '12 Summer brew.

Yep...had this last weekend w/some grilled meat and sausage and it was killer. That subtle oak influence really makes this a toasty treat and great w/food.

Not to style as well, as it is brewed with rye, but let us not forget Surly Fest.

Where? 'Cause BA and lists it as a Märzen Okto, and I didn't see Hinterland calling it a Vienna.

Isn't it fairly new? Not to mention the underlying disrespect of anything "lager" by the majority of BA members. Subtle and smooth = bad. :astonished:

I agree. Anything that can be considered malt forward seems to get a bad rap around here.

Just saw it (Vienna Lager) in small print at the Hinterland web site -- at 5.8% it's pushing the Oktoberfest limit, let alone the Vienna limit! And having sampled this beer last year, it's no Vienna.

Maybe not so much "malt forward" as "light hops" and/or "low alcohol." Look at reviews for Munich Helles. Not exactly in-your-face malts, certainly not in-your-face hops. Just mellow and subtle. Heaven forbid.

Even though it is marketed as a dopplebock, I would classify Capital Autumnal Fire as an Oktoberfest, or maybe an Imperial Oktoberfest if such a thing existed.

Doesn't Cap call the Autumnal Fire a cross between a Doppelbock and an Oktoberfest? But you're right, if there was a true "Imperial Oktoberfest," Capital created the style.

They might, and it is a good desciption. It tastes more Marzen than dopplebock to me.

Whatever it is, it is simply excellent, IMO by far their best beer, and I think world class.

Their own Oktoberfest is no slouch. Much better than many of the American Oktos to-style -- bready and toasty, not nutty as many of them tend toward.

Millstream's is one of the oldest American marzens. It's also my favorite.
