India Pale Ale (IPA) is one of the most popular and diverse beer styles in the world. English, American, Double, Imperial, Triple, Dry-Hopped, Fresh-Hopped, Wet-Hopped, Cryo-Hopped, Black, Sour, Brett, New England, Hazy, Juicy, Milkshake, Brut, Cold, and everything in between. On BeerAdvocate alone, we currently list over 116,000 active beers within the greater IPA category, with the hazy variety seemingly dominating the overall category and beer scene for many years.

But there’s one IPA that rises above the sea of hazy offerings, bringing clarity to all who seek it. West Coast IPA! As in the style, not just an IPA brewed by a west coast brewery, and one that’s arguably been around for decades. We’re talking a clear, bright, golden beer (never hazy or muddy looking) that kicks you in the palate with fruity (pineapple, grapefruit, berries), citrusy (like tangerine), piney (literally, a pinecone in your mouth), and dank (pungent, resiny, herbal) hop flavors, often pulls you back in with an often aggressive bitterness, and welcomes you to the westside with a slightly higher alcohol content than other non-Imperial IPAs (typically around 7 percent).

Join me as we celebrate the West Coast IPA with a box of twelve delivered to your door via our friends at Half Time!

As always, thanks for your support and Respect Beer! :heavymetal::beers:

    ### THE BEERS

For this box we reached out to a bunch of our friends on the west coast, as well as a handful from Illinois and New York, to help us pay tribute to the West Coast IPA. Again, you won’t find any hazy beers in this box, only clean, fruity, and bitter beers that pack a punch.
    1. Beachwood Brewing | Huntington Beach, CA
Eyes to the Sky | 7.1% | 16 oz can
Look up as this meteoric West Coast IPA showers your palate with celestial aromas from Strata, Simcoe, & Columbus hops! A collaboration with El Segundo Brewing Co.

    2. Breakside Brewery | Portland, Oregon
West Coast Best Coast | 7.1% | 16 oz can
West Coast, Best Coast is loaded entirely with the ‘new trinity’ of aroma hops: Citra, Mosaic, and Strata, as well as a dash of Nelson Sauvin in the dry hop. The aroma is rife with berry, bright citrus, tropical fruit, and resin.

    3. El Segundo Brewing Co. | El Segundo, CA
      Come Original IPA | 7% | 16 oz can
This collaboration with the band 311 is dark straw colored beer that is brilliantly clear with impressive white foam and lacing. The flavors are tropical driven with notes of mango and lychee. Candy-like attributes such as strawberry fruit rollup and Smartees are all mixed up. Moderate bitterness balances the sweeter fruit characteristics, and the beer finishes clean and dry with a subtle white bread nuance. Hops: Simcoe, Mosaic, Chinook, Malt: Weyermann pilsner, Rahr 2-Row, flaked wheat. Allergens: Wheat

    4. Evil Twin Brewing | Queens, NY
Our Second Most Popular IPA | 6.5% | 16 oz can
Crisp and crushable West Coast IPA brewed with Columbus, Citra and Simcoe Hops. Allergens: Wheat

    5. Ghost Town Brewing | Oakland, CA
      Locust | 6.8% | 16 oz can
The ancient plague passes over us yet again with bitterness anew. Locust is a 6.8% West Coast IPA made with Citra + Mosaic + Ekuanot. There is no sun, no sky, no tomorrow when you are consumed by Locusts' thick, dizzying swarm; legs of tickling papaya tails slap of lime run amok and short horns shoot notes of pine across the senses. Millions of buzzing wings blow a clean finish across the palate; Locust leaves a desolate landscape across the earth.

    6. Highland Park Brewery | Los Angeles, CA
      Hello, LA | 6.8% | 16 oz can
West Coast IPA brewed with Citra & Mosaic hops. Our flagship west coast IPA with 2 of our favorite hops. A clear beer producing aromas of ripe clementine, mixed berries, & passion fruit. Our ode to the city of Los Angeles!

    7. Hop Butcher for the World | Chicago, IL
      Sap Moss | 8% | 16 oz can
A Citra, Simcoe & Chinook-hopped West Coast Double IPA.

    8. Moonlight Brewing Co. | Santa Rosa, CA
Bombay by Boat IPA | 6.2% | 16 oz can
A classic West Coast IPA focused on balance and drinkability. Let this blend of hops and malt transport you to a time when IPAs were deep, dank and clear. A resinous palette without being sticky, malty depth without being sweet.

    9. Phase Three Brewing | Lake Zurich, IL
      Vivid Light | 6.25% | 16 oz can
Vivid Light is a West Coast IPA showcasing a blend of five classic hops to throw off notes of dank weed, sticky pine, and zesty citrus. This juice is bitter, dry, and lovingly familiar.

    10. Pizza Port Brewing | Carlsbad, CA
      Swami's | 6.8% | 16 oz can
Named for a famous local surfbreak, Swami's IPA has been a Pizza Port staple for over 20 years. With a more traditional hop profile of Centennial, Cascade, CTZ, Chinook, Citra and Simcoe, this beer is the quintessential example of a West Coast style IPA as it showcases minimal malt character and the fresh bitterness of citrus and pine.

    11. Radiant Beer Co. | Anaheim, CA
Part of the Light | 7% | 16 oz can
Part of the Light is a modern take on the West Coast IPA. A light malt base, featuring a touch of wheat & Vienna malts, provides the platform for Mosaic, Simcoe, Motueka & Cashmere hops to shine. Lower in bitterness than westies of yore with a clean, dry finish, late addition & dry-hopping produces bright notes of lime & grapefruit zest, honeydew melon & strawberry. Allergens: Wheat

    12. Wayward Lane Brewing | Schoharie, NY
      Terraform | 6.8% | 16 oz can
This iteration was blasted on the hot side with mountains of El Dorado and Chinook, then dosed with a hefty addition of Mosaic Incognito. After a neutral fermentation, the well attenuated base was dry hopped at immense rates with Mosaic, El Dorado, El Dorado Cryo and Talus Cryo. Piles of ripe blueberry, bright pink grapefruit juice, and watermelon sorbet, all layered onto a lush and piney backbone with a pronounced yet inviting bitterness.

    ### FAQ / HELP for West Coast IPA Box (2023)

    Is this a virtual fest?
While there will be online components, this isn't a virtual event. Enjoy the box of beers at your leisure! Feel free to join the dedicated forum too.

How many beers are included in the box?
You'll receive a box with one beer from each of our twelve (12) participating breweries ranging in package format and volume size. Each box should provide sampling for at least two people. Sharing is caring!

Why does this box cost $124.99?
Shipping and handling thousands of boxes of awesome beer isn't cheap. We also pay for all of the beer and whatnot. On top of this, the cost of literally everything has gone up in recent years.

Will the beers be shipped cold?
No. It's cost-prohibitive and we've had issues with boxes breaking down due to the moisture. That said, the beer will always be in a temp controlled facility, except when in route for delivery, and Half Time will hold back shipments based on local temps.

    Will this box include drinkware?
No, but we do sell BeerAdvocate glassware.

Why is the box only available in certain states and zip codes?
Shipping beer in America is whack! Each state has their own laws for shipping and receiving beer.

Currently, Half Time ships to specific zip codes in the following U.S. states and territories: AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MN, MO, MT, NE, NC, ND, NH, NM, NY, NJ, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, TX, VA, WA, and Puerto Rico. For more info, please refer to Half Time’s shipping info page.

Protip: You can always arrange to have your box shipped to a friend or family member in a neighboring state.

    When will my box ship?
To ensure the product is as fresh as possible, please be advised that boxes won't ship immediately upon purchase. Boxes will begin shipping in early June 2023 and arrival times will vary depending on the destination state.

If I live near a Half Time Location, can I pick up my box in person?

No. Self-pick up isn’t an option for this box.

What if I'm not home when my box gets delivered?
An adult age 21+ must be at the physical address provided when purchasing to receive and sign for the package. Most carriers attempt delivery three times. To contact your carrier, their information is listed on your tracking link provided by Half Time. If your local carrier has informed you that your crate has been "Returned to Sender" or "RTS," it is very likely that it actually hasn't been sent back to Half Time, but stored in at the local carrier's main shipping hub. Please contact beeradvocate@halftimebeverage.com or call Half Time at (845) 462-7899 to help contact your carrier for re-delivery attempts.

What if my box of beers shows up damaged?
Please contact beeradvocate@halftimebeverage.com or call at (845) 462-7899 for assistance.

    Can I get a refund?
All sales are final. No refunds, or partial refunds, will be issued. All breweries advertised have confirmed providing beer for this box, however, breweries and beers are subject to change without notice. There will be no refunds or exchanges resulting from the failure of any brewery to appear in the box.

How do I sync my BeerAdvocate account and Half Time order?
Instructions to sync your BeerAdvocate account and Half Time order will be sent via email (the one you used to purchase your box) starting in mid-June and then weekly after that until sales end. Please check your spam folder.

Do I need to sync to receive the box?
    No.

How do I participate in the dedicated forum?
    You must sync your account.

    My question wasn't answered here.

I was proud of myself for not purchasing three, because this box could easily be renamed the “ovaltine Irrationally Loves WCIPA’s” box. IJS.

From my conversations with the brewers, who are also concerned about the freshness of their WCIPAs, many of these were fresh batches being canned just prior to shipping to Half Time; later this month.

On the fence on this one. I like the theme, and I get that a variety pack and shipping comes with premium, but more than $10 a can is a little steep. I normally balk when breweries want $20 a 4-pack for an IPA, and this is double that price.

Not being argumentative. but rather voicing my opinion. I just want to remind you and others here that there are ALOT of costs associated with these boxes that people probably don't think about. If i didn't have friends/peers in the industry, I would honestly overlook a bunch of this as well.

You're not buying a case of 12 beers from a brewery direct. You're buying 12 beers that were created by 12 different breweries, that are then shipped to a warehouse for short term temperature controlled storage. Once there, the boxes are "created" which adds labor costs at the distro and then they actually have to be shipped, which also adds cost.

All that factored in, it's not really an unreasonable price for a curated box. At least that's my opinion.

But looking at their website, what I don't understand is why Half Time's prices (before adding in shipping) are so much higher than other retail beer stores for normally distributed beer? For example, they have Lawson's Sip of Sunshine listed at $24 a 4-pack (before shipping). I can buy it around here (further from VT than NY) for $16 or $17.

1 ) are people in landlocked states with crap beers/ipas
    2) people who loves WCIPA way too much
3 ) people who want to give money to HalfTime
