First time trying this one from Commonweath out of VA. Good shit

 

I'm gradually getting around to trying all of the beers that local brewery (and I mean local as in "maybe 15 minute drive from my house," not "in the same state") Devil's Backbone makes. Somehow this one went untried for years even though I remember seeing it the very first year I drank beer...


...Pumpkin Hunter, their fall seasonal pumpkin-spice type beer. Apparently also went by the name "Ichabod Crandall" at one point in the past, before my beer-drinking years -- I think the six-pack holder or the website's description of the beer (maybe both) still references this even after the name's changed.

Pleasant amber-orangey color, clear, lots of bubbles, nice layer of off-white foam that sticks around pretty well -- it's a nice-looking beer. Smell has a slightly odd quality to it, something about the roasted/toasted aspect of the malt seems a little "off" in a way I can't quite describe. On a more positive note, I am detecting actual pumpkin (like the big orange vegetable itself, not just "pumpkin spice"), and it may actually be the second-most-noticeable presence in the beer after the malt! This carries over to the taste as well -- the malt (nicer in taste than in smell) comes out first, followed by pumpkin in the background and hints of spices further back.

Overall I'm finding this one pretty pleasant today -- wasn't the biggest fan when I had my first few bottles, but either my taste buds are just really in the mood for this sort of beer today or it's grown on me a little as I've gone through the six-pack.

 

Had no idea Jason Newsted started his own band. That's rad.

Last night of mini tour and getting another hoodie, this time for my 82 year old mom (she said she'd take one and wear it!): Epic Lil' Brainless Raspberries, 16 oz can of PBR, Weldwerks Heffeweizen, and an Avery IPA. This mini ends and another starts in just under two weeks (I think).
