Alvarado St. — Back in Action



This can was packaged on 12/18/18. I have a bad feeling almost immediately upon pouring this beer. The label is promising me a West Coast IPA, which Alvarado does pretty well actually, but what I'm getting is a hazy mess. As you can see, this pours with a completely murky deep orange body and 1.5 fingers of head on a semi-aggressive pour. Head retention is below average for the style, while the lacing is fairly typical. Smell is yeasty and fruity, as is common with Alvarado IPAs. Unlike many other Alvarado IPAs, however, the nose on this thing is pretty subdued. I'm disappointed in the smell, considering the other brews I had from this brewery (100+). Taste is ... kind of bland. I'd say that it's tropical, with distinct notes of papaya and mango, but the beer tastes watered down. In terms of feel, this is a NEIPA. This beer has a soft body.

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed by this beer. I thought I was going to get a solid new-age West Coast IPA, since Alvarado does these well (their Mai Tai and Single Cone are among my favorite IPAs). Instead, I got a bland NEIPA. thank u, next.

Overall: 3.52 (-9.3% rDev) — this is not surprising. Alvarado likes to tinker with every batch of their beers, and this one looks clearly different from previous batches.

Awesome batch this year as always. Lasting head retention/thick lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light peppercorn, and pine hops; with balanced caramel, toasted bread malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Amazingly drinkable. Super juicy and fairly dank/earthy Chinook, Centennial, Cascade hops; perfect bready malt balance, not overly sweet/heavy feeling from lingering resin dryness. I love C hops all year, the fresh hops are very obvious with the herbal/spicy quality going on.
