    Beer #4. Continuing my brief mid-October foray into new pumpkin beer ticks. Fwiw, I enjoy this more than the original. Less spicy, and easy to drink for a 9%er.

    I keep coming back to this one. Every time I'm in the bottle shop, Devil's Reach by Cape May Brewing calls out to me. And I keep answering it. It's a Belgian Strong Ale. It's not Duvel, but it's not bad either. Just might be my favorite new beer.

    Hazy gold color in a lighter shade with white cap and good lacing.

    Scent of clean, piney, herbal hops with a citrus undercurrent.

    On entry malt is more apparent than in the scent with just a hint of sweetness. Hops are upfront from the beginning with multiple flavors of pine, lemon zest, a touch of ripe tropical fruit and that herbal thing still going on. Sharp herbs like fresh Basil which is to say savory rather than sweet. A flavorful 4.9% beer that punches above it's weight.

    Excellent clear brown body topped with a dense and creamy head, nicely sculpted; sticky sheets of foam cling to the glass. Warm and sweet malted grain smell; toffee and hazelnuts. Slightly sweet, slightly fruity, but all wrapped up in a tasty malty body with some toffee and roasted nut notes; low-level hop bitterness. Medium body; warm; coats the tongue a bit; sticky sweetness.

    I've had Newcastle Brown Ale numerous times but never reviewed it since being a BA member, and certainly have never had the Lagunitas version until now. This beer is well-balanced and delightful to drink. The malt qualities are there across the board. There is some sweetness, but it isn't overpowering. It is the roasted, dark grain character that really shines.

    I’ve gotta say, that coming from the land of 7% IPA’s, a 3.7% bitter is a welcome change of pace.

    It’s 50 degrees and pouring outside....and I’m sitting in a nice warm 300 year old pub enjoying a hand pulled cask ale. Life is decidedly different from Los Angeles!

    I agree, some tasty beers and cask ales around here. For the higher abv drinks whisky is the obvious option. At least here in Scotland that is :slight_smile:

    Pressing matters to take care of today on my day off. Enjoy 3 beers from two generous BA's and @Lingenbrau...

    ...and listen to Joy Division and fine tune cartridge alignment.
    First up is Urban Chestnut Brewing Co./O-Katz. My 4th new marzen of the year. This one courtesy of @joe1510.

    Man, the can cracked open and what a wiff of floral and grassy hops.
    Bready malts, red apple and medicinal in the taste. The few Urban Chestnuts I have had were good and this one does not disappoint.
    Pairs perfectly with Joy Division.
