No, you're not seeing things. And yes, it's still 2021.

Twenty five years ago today, I wrote my first beer review. It was the inspiration for everything that followed. See: Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale: The Beer That Started BeerAdvocate for more on that.

Anyway. I thought it'd be fun to bring back the old logo. It was originally based on the logo that I created for Brewguide, which was the name of the site before 2000. The typeface used is Impact, which according to Wikipedia is: "a sans-serif typeface in the industrial or grotesque style designed by Geoffrey Lee in 1965 and released by the Stephenson Blake foundry of Sheffield. It is well known for having been included in the core fonts for the Web package and distributed with Microsoft Windows since Windows 98. By 2014, it had been used extensively in image macros or other Internet memes."

Why Impact? Because I was a few beers in and thought to myself, "Yeah, Impact, because we're going to make an impact!" :grimacing: I then dropped a background around the type to give it more of a logo feel. It's all very 90s.

    brewguide-logo.png
In 2000, we rebranded as BeerAdvocate. The site was framed with a black background, so it evolved into this:

    beeradvocate-retro-logo-old.png

And then I decided to clean it up a bit to celebrate 25 years (since my first beer review).

    beeradvocate-retro-logo-new.png

We'll be doing some new merch with the new old logo too. More on that soon, as well as other ways that we'll be celebrating 25 years of BeerAdvocate over the next year. And hopefully it involves being able to raise some beers with many of you. :beers:

(Note: We'll be leaving this logo up for a little while. It's not our official new logo.)

Does this mean there will be an official new logo?

The new old logo gives me some major late 90s vibes, a time I wish I was old enough to live through. Loving it, I'll have to grab some of the merch

Did the header behavior change with the logo, too?

My memory is that when I scrolled down, the logo (or maybe a smaller "Ba" logo) would remain in the "sticky" header that stays on top of the page even when you scroll down, providing a link back to BA's main page from wherever I was in whatever page I was on.

One of those, "I think it used to be this way..." kind of things.

Well, it's better than the logo I created for the software startup at the exact same time! Knowing from experience, it's not easy. Congrats on the 20+ years!

I remember the logo was just BA for a minute, in a style somewhat reminiscent of another place. People lost their shit over that and it was fun. Times have changed; we all mellowed.

The fact that your original branding has remained consistent for such a long time, forever in internet years, is testament to the simple and memorable design.

    Have a beer.
    Cheers

Congrats on the Silver Anniversary. Maybe with some persuasion some BA’s could twist the arm of Sam C from DFH to make a special Beer Advocste Ale clocking in at 25% ABV of course and have some real silver flakes in it.

I immediately knew it was the old logo when I opened BA yesterday. There was something in my subconscious that kicked in and triggered great memories of first discovering Beeradvocate.

It would be cool to try to track down old members who were "infamous" on these boards...

Venom and Ding come to mind.

Kind of funny that 10 years ago people would have thought a Lager Fest couldn’t be successful. Mainly because IPAs were (and obviously still are) so popular.

25 years ago it likely would have been the same sentiment, but for different reasons. Mainly because anyone getting into craft would associate them with the Budweisers of the world.
