Today I cracked open a 5 month old breakfast stout to see how my 2012 batch was aging and it was terrible! Very acidic, starting to go flat, and had a pretty lame nose on it. I'm very new to cellaring beers so pardon me for my rookie choices in beer.

Schlitz of undetermined age, still had the pull tap top.

Coffee-oriented beers aren't prime candidates for aging, especially if you love coffee flavors. So that's a good rule of thumb to keep in mind.

And SA Triple Bock '97. Though it's so unique, even in a 2 oz. taste. Definitely a bucket-list beer.

Thanks for the tip on coffee-oriented beers. As for the triple bock I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about it. Do you think it was so bad due to the way the bottle handled/aged, or was the beer really just that bad?

Something is going on if a 5 month old breakfast stout was that bad. I just opened one the other day and it was delicious; better than fresh IMO.

I think it's just the nature of the beer itself, especially after 15+ years. No bad handling assumed, but it's just how beer goes.

2009 Piraat. This beer needs to be consumed fresh IMO.

This^ I had one two days ago that was devine, not much different than fresh. Drinking a 2011 Wake and Bake right now and really enjoying it, its not the coffee forward beer it is fresh, but it's chocolatey and delicious.

Maybe my 5 month old was just mishandled at the liquor store I purchased it at, a bad cap or something else all together. I also have a 4 pack that was bottled 2 months later, and purchased at a different store so hopefully they'll turn out better.

That's easy, a two-year old Pliny the Elder. Absolutely terrible (I'm talking BMC bad). That beer is completely dependent on hops; no malt backbone to speak of.

2009 Mirror Mirror or Short's Uber Goober. Take your pick.

Infected Mirror Mirror? I was lucky and had one that was left in the fridge since it was bought. It was delicious! I would gladly take the gamble for this one in the future.

I will also nominate 97' triple bock. So bad, yet so fascinating. I cant bring myself to pour the rest of my bottle out. Its like that wound in your mouth that you cant help but poke repeatedly.

Any DIPA that some dummy thinks is going to magically turn into a barleywine after a couple years.

As others have said, SA Triple Bock. Not only the worst aged beer, but THE worst beer period.

I'd love to say Triple Bock but can't because the one I had wasn't aged much.
