Mine is by far this year's fresh!! It was amazing and way less cloyingly sweet as previous vintages!
I've only had '10 through '12 and cracked open a '11 right before heading through the gates this year, and I gotta be honest I wasn't a fan of how hoppy this years was. Now it wasn't bad by any means, and I know the hops will die off with age, but I much liked out '11 we got to have before going in. It's been too long since I've had '10 and seeing as I'm only sitting on one bottle I think I won't be opening it until I have a nice 5 year vertical.
The beer is way different fresh than aged in my experience. The hops fade rather quickly and it becomes relatively sweet a year later. I've always enjoyed the hop flavor better when fresh, though of the aged bottles I've been a part of, the '08 was my favorite.
Looking forward to the new one sometime soon. Darkness is always one of my favorite yearly releases.
What about 07? It's not really close when that vintage is in the mix.
I'd be happy to make my decision after a sample...
My point being, if you're going to create a poll why not include all vintages?
I think there were only 250 of those bottles released and of those probably 20 still exist so i didn't count it
Fair enough but there's lots of BA's out there who've had it so why not include it? It's your poll, do as you'd like, but just my opinion. Obviously, you've never had it or else it would be an option in your poll.
There were 480 bottles released, and several more held back (someone brought #490-something to our D-Day table last year, having won it at a Surly event earlier that year).
And, having had it in 2010 and 2011, I vote for 2007.
I don't see why you didn't include it anyway. If so few people have tried it, then it won't get many votes, right? Unless it does...
A friend of mine just drank a 2010 and said it was infected...anyone else run into this issue??
Yeah, I agree, I can't vote without the '07 up there. It's clearly the best.
Kind of like asking which Project Runway judge is hottest & not listing Heidi Klum.
I read OPs poll as "Out of these 5 vintages, which Surly Darkness vintage do you prefer?".
Those of you wanting 2007 (heck...even 2006) could create your own poll.
2007 was my favorite vintage by far... so consider this post my write-in vote for the 2007.
I've only had it once last year at the Big Beers and Barleywines fest in Vail, CO, so that was my favorite. Until January and then that will be the my favorite vintage. Lather, rinse, repeat...
Again sorry didnt include later vintages my reason is as follows
1. Wanted to poll vintages that people actually may have tried
2. Didn't want rareity/hype to affect votes
3. Wanted to poll vintages that are still out there
Like said above if u guys want u can make a poll with all the vintages you want
Heck u can even make a poll with a 2002 vintage before surly even existed!
Alas Darkness is one of the whales I have yet to try. I think the 2012 may have the coolest label though...
Darkness is a whale?
Looks like this years and 2008 are neck and neck!
by far, not arguing. But the 07 is still out there, several BA's were able to tick this one at Darkness Day this year. Might be hard to find, but by far is it not out there any more. Which goes back to your first point, several BA's had pours of this beer this year. If you stood by the truck, you probably had some poured in your glass around 9:00 this past Saturday.
my opinion, cue Mordomongo
Whatever vintage I happen to be drinking at the moment, of course.
Really liked 2011 that was had before we went into darkness this year. 2012 was good but not great for me.
Excluding what Surly has of '07, there's got to be way more than 20 left. I know it was just a guess, but the number is definitely higher than that.
I really enjoyed '10 fresh as well as '09. Have not had '12 yet. I personally wasn't a big fan of '11. It was extremely fruit forward in my opinion.
If you're suggesting that the '06 and '07 have higher ratings or would "win" this poll due to being more rare, I think you couldn't be further from the truth. I haven't had one in a while, but the '07 is supposedly still hoppier than any of the newer ones by a longshot. I'll report back next chance I get to try it. People didn't like it because it was rare, they loved it because it was a huge, hoppy imperial stout. Packaged product was indeed rare, but I had a ton of both the '06 and '07, simply by heading up to Minneapolis and drinking all I wanted.
I was not suggesting it in that post but i was in above post so I will play ball
I present to you:
I have had this beer and I can tell you that there is nothing special and that the stuff people are pulling have to be in their heads. there is no way this beer is better than bourbon county or kbs.
this is why when I poll I try to use beer that most people may have tried.
I wonder how oxidized that growler is
Wasn't sure if you were suggesting it or not, but since we're playing ball... I agree with you on Black Note.
then I sir will take your word on the 07 vintage of darkness! wish I could try it but I for sure could not trade for it
07 was by far the best and frankly not even close. So different from the other vintages. Having tried the 07 the other vintages pale in comparison. Cannot stand the overpowering sweetness of some of the more recent vintages.
we had this side by side Darkness Eve this year. The 07 was still hoppier than the 12.
which one do u prefer? did u do a blind tasting? what do u think of the 2012?
I know its been said before, but the 07 is completely different than any of the other vintages. I loved them both, to me, the 07 is extremely complex with hints of roast, hops, and not a lot of cocoa. The 12, taste lends more towards the cocoa and the roast than anything else. Do not taste any hop presence at all in the 12. Blind tasting? No. It was a little present I pulled out for several people that just happened to be close to my truck on Darkness Eve.
Would u rank it 07, 12 then other years?
I found the 08 to be way too sweet
