    1. Stone SSR - in my mind it was the perfect black ipa, but since it is no longer in production, I will go:
1b. Lagunitas nighttime - great balance of citrusy hops and roast malt
    2. Wookey jack - wonderful citrus/tropical notes, with roast/chocolate and spice/smoothness from the rye
    3. Odell mountain standard - terrific double black ipa, huge citrus, spicy hops, some dark fruit and chocolate. Taste like a roasty ipa, feels like a porter/stout.

    In order:

6:56 (2010) from Element Brewing (4.52 fresh from bottle)
Dark Element from Element Brewing (4.30 fresh from growler, 3.93 from bottle)
Dark Penance from Founders (3.80 from bottle)

6:56 (2010) was billed as a double Dark Element, and it sure as hell was. I've got a couple bottles in the basement because I had a couple of trades fall through. Now I'm just aging it to see how it goes. Hopefully the high alcohol content (15%) will help either preserve it or help mellow the flavor. Still willing to trade one if anyone is curious.

I was afraid I would get through this whole thread without seeing this - I've seen a ton of the same beers listed, but I thought this one was one of the better ones I've ever had. Maybe it got overshadowed with a couple disappointing releases earlier in that series?

First off. MAINE WEEZ and BEER III are not Black IPA. They are American Black Ales atleast by Maine Brewings Website they are not. They do have flavors that are tyipally in a black ipa.

Alot of you are confusing the Hoppy Black ales as Black Ipas when they are not.

To me, an ideal black IPA must adequately embody both the stout and IPA characters. The malts should be notably roasty and complex, and the hop character should accentuate and compliment the malts--rather the opposite of how I usually view IPAs. Having said that, my favorite black IPAs are

I started a thread a month or so ago about thoughts on this, but received crickets. Being that Old Rasputin is earthy hop forward for the style and relatively cheap, pour equal parts Old Raspy & one of your IPAs or DIPAs from a sixer or four pack. The outcome is better than the majority of the Black IPAs in the market.

Again not a favorite style, but fresh Sublimely is far better than pretty good, the worst examples are simply awful.
