I have the definite answer to what it takes to be a true beer advocate. Plain and simple? Heatwave33.

Some of you may have seen the thread a few weeks back where he offered up a small competition for a free growler of Apple Brandy Hunahphu. He selected me based on my impending nuptials and between the time I was selected and his shipping, the unthinkable happened, 4 of his growlers of ABH exploded.

After letting me know that it wasn't meant to be, he still promised to send me a little something special to make up for it. Keep in mind here, I have done absolutely nothing to earn a beer from anyone, let alone someone 1500 miles away. He sent me a UPS shipping number, and to my shock the listed weight on the tracking page said 24.5lbs.

The package arrived today, and the haul that appeared before me was nothing short of spectacular.
    Cigar City Beers:
    Patio Pils
    Church on a Hill
    100K+OT - 5th Batch
    Hunaphu Imperial Stout
    Cucumber Saison
    Black Whole

    Firestone Parabola '12
    Heady Topper

I can't thank him enough and I will be toasting at my wedding with a Hunahpu. and maybe a few others....

    Just awesome.

Yea he is a great guy for sure. i arranged for him to grab and ship me a bottle of Homefront IPA from CCB. I check the UPS and its 13 lbs. I opened it yesterday, and wow. I unwrapped (in this box):
    2012 Dark Lord
    Homefront IPA
    Patio Pils
    Coffee Bender
    Surly Hell
    Buffalo Sweat.

The guy also sent me a box containing KBS, Darkness, and Raison D'Extra. Heatwave33 is a great guy, and a true BA.

Kudos to all involved in that fiasco. Handled exceptionally well by all parties.

I will also offer my public apology to Heatwave33. 98/100 times, a story like that is complete bullshit. I guess this was not one of em'.

Did the growlers just randomly explode or were they tapped against something?

" What makes a True Beer Advocate?"

Some would say that spelling a beer's name correctly is the definition of beeradvocate...

Yep, awesome thread. Heatwave33 deserves some special BA knighthood or something.

We're lucky as there are many true beer advocates on this site. Brabander and his neverending Westvleteren generosity comes to mind as does the UK's Reluctant Scoop and his amazing beer tours of Sheffield (just ask jazzyjeff13 and Emperor Bevis).

    awesome stuff.

want to mention (especially to people who post a lot of longwinded, anti-ebay / anti-exploitation posts like i do) that the kind of generosity talked about in this thread is exponentially more valuable than forum bluster such as mine about anti-ebay / anti-exploitation.

it's good to remind people via posts that the community is worthwhile, but it's better to remind them with real world generosity. without stuff like this there's really no point in moralizing about "the community." it's like adama's speech in the battlestar galactica pilot.

Heatwave is really just a fantastic guy. And I didn't know you were a UM fan, too -- even better!

He welcomes one and all to his home, regardless of the rarities or lack thereof in the individual's stash. And he never hesitates to share some of the great stuff he has at any given time. I've also seen firsthand -- well, empty bottles anyway! -- how generous he is with a trading buddy who lives near me.

Just a great guy who also happens to have an awesome wife, cute kids, cute pets, and an awesome beer collection.
