Right in time for Cinco de Mayo...

Just got back from Total Wine with one of my favorites, Avion Anejo - originally had it as part of a flight at a local Mexican restaurant, and have since bought a bottle or two...

Aged in whiskey barrels, this has a great dry oak character, with peppered orchard and stone fruit notes, and a soft sweetness suggestive of vanilla caramel and maple candy... Very smooth, very nice...

What kinda tequila is in your glass?

    Salud...

Currently have a bottle of Cava de oro extra anejo open. Picked up while on vacation in Isla Mujeres down in the quintana roo. Beautiful 100% blue agave tequila aged in french oak barrels. Definitely a desserty tequila. Smooth silky texture, moderate sweetness and no heat! Sits pretty heavy on the palate. Notes of oak, honey, maple, and french toast!

What are some favorite Mezcals for you all?

I enjoy Donaji Mezcal de Oaxaca. I'll have some of that tonight as well.

I did buy another bottle of Riazul lol, but currently checking out Astral silver tequila...

The story here is that it is made the way tequila was made 150 years ago - specifically, the agave hearts are roasted, not steamed, and then fermented with native yeasts... I did a three stage tasting: coupla sips neat, then tossed in an ice cube and had a coupla sips cold, and lastly, added some Cointreau and lime to the remainder... [IMG]
Sharper and less sweet than the norm, and specifically the Avion silver I have on hand... Has earthy, vegetal, musty, dry and almost smoky elements... Maybe a little rough around the edges, but improved with ice, allowing more softening sweetness to develop...

Worked with margarita fixings; a good sign as that's really what I bought it for... lol
