I wish I was well traveled enough to answer this question... I am going to rent a Winnebago, travel to every state and go to every brewery and will report back. I live in Virginia and can't believe how many new breweries have opened around here in the last couple of years, but off the top of my head, I am thinking California and Michigan have to be up there.

Let's not forget to add Schell's to the Minnesota list. Yum!

And don't forget Pipeworks in Bucktown/Wicker Park area either. I really love what I've had from them too. Seriously, Illinois is very underrated in the argument for states with the best breweries.

Chicago city limits alone could put IL in the top 20

Michigan and California. Seems like everyone is pleased when Michigan breweries expand distribution, and many breweries/beers are establishing a national presence.

Overall the midwest, I mean the great lakes region wins for me. Too hard to pick just one state from that region.

I think it depends on your taste but most of my favorite breweries are in California and Colorado.

Illinois. See the "#1 beer you've rated" thread and then tell me Goose Island's barrel aged stuff isn't boss.

See also: Pipeworks, Half Acre, Two Brothers, Revolution, Piece, Haymarket

Connecticut. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a brewery doing better things than NEBC.

IL ain't MI, PN, CA, CO, or OR...but, we got Boubon County from GI, those wonderful one off's (and Daisy Cutter) from 1/2 Acre, Pipeworks entire lineup, Two Bros, Metropolitan, Revolution (best bang 4 the buck IPA in Anti-Hero), and these new guys called Spitefull, etc, etc.

IOW - IL is coming on strong folks....strong...
