Honestly, I expected a lot more from that beer. It was pretty neutral overall and should have been a classic.

The beer is more of an IPL than a pilsner; kind of interesting bit hardly their best stuff.

They set the bar fairly high based on my experience with the couple regular lineup beers you sent me. Plus you don't strike me as a big IPL guy. Fortunately, you had a very nice wee goldie to give it a boost.

Speaking of goldies, I poured one of my current shelf favorites:

So good. A perfect complement to their 10 and 14.

Didn't feel like a beer, asked the wife what she wanted, and she wanted a refreshing drink with apple cider. We ended up with apple cider + Maker Mark cask strength + cinnamon + caramel sauce. This is way too easy to drink. And it would be really good hot.

The last of my Glenallachie 1989 29-year old sample. Single cask, aged in a sherry butt. Simply amazing.

Isn't there a name for that one? Either way, count me in. I got the cinnamon and bourbon, will pick up the cider and caramel sauce this weekend.

Testing Balcones' new Lineage release against their standard "1" single malt. The two whiskys are definitely brothers ... hard to say which is better, probably the 53% "1" but the 47% Lineage really punches above its weight.

Probably need to do a Balcones shootout at some point. This is fun.

    Cheers!

Beautiful glass, Christmas present from @WesMantooth . It’s ridiculously heavy though, good for knocking surly bartenders out who think they decide when last call is.

He gives it a very respectable score (in BA.com/Ralfy ratio equivalent, it's a strong 4.25 ).

A Nashville Barrel Company Single Barrel straight rye sample courtesy of @sjguglielmo; the type of pour that would have me drinking rye more often. Sweet heat, cinnamon, vanilla, potpourri on the nose, with buttercream and spearmint along the palate; velvet. Great call on this one, Steve!

Excited to finally revisit this one courtesy of yet another sample provided by @sjguglielmo. A Midwinter Night's Dram...just as rich as I remember, though this pour is leaving more room for nuance.

Baking spices, oak, prunes, quince, dates, residual rye spice harmonizing nicely with a bit of heat on the nose; fruitcake, sandalwood, hints of vanilla cream, plenty of Port influence comfortably in the background, lingering black pepper going down; really unique stuff, and very happy to try once again.

    Cheers!

As mentioned in WBAYDN after some beer and wine:

Little more smoke to this tonight, it seems. Still pretty mild - maybe the tannins in the wine affected my taste buds?

Interesting - is that a marketed thing, or are you just making one up yourself? Either way works, of course.

You bring your own glass to bars?

Ok, so tonight has been one of those where everything I drink tastes quite good. Started with a Two Hearted, then some fairly decent wine (bourbon barrel involved though I get no influence at all from). Then here with the more noticeable smoke from the Oban, now this:

There’s a lot of Virginia in that pic. Reviewed this a while ago in that thread (that I’ve neglected too much, but I’m not reviewing beers as much, too). I want to say a bit of a fortified wine influence, but again some mellow Scotch peat/smoke is hitting me with this.

Figured this Virginia bottle makes a good one for that infinity bottle/solera thing for that reason alone. Question: generally how much do you start with/add to such a bottle? I mean I would guess it might depend on what you like and think and learn as to what might help the blend, but from day one, what’s a good start point? This is at like 20% left.

Ok, so is about 30 minutes between pours in this thread bad? I’m not doing large pours so I’ll self-convince normalcy.

Since things are going well, let’s see if this is a little more exciting than on Thanksgiving:

Not quite so watery, but still pretty smooth, especially up front. A slow yet moderate crescendo of burn, so pretty smooth. First non-win tonight, relatively, though not a loss.

It's all up to you. 20% is a pretty big base for an infinity bottle, but it's not an improper one. If you want that Virginian to lead the way, then that will work great.

The real question may be if you want to sample some more of that Virginian by itself before blending. Obviously, once you start blending it, that individual whisky is gone.

Made one up myself. My wife got me a beer advent calendar and the kids some Minecraft advent calendars, and the kids felt she needed her own. I wasn't satisfied with the whisky advent calendars I could find, so I bought just about one of each sample at the liquor store, and built a box with 24 little compartments out of cardboard and duct tape for her. She's been generous about sharing them with me so far.

    Surely you jest?

If I have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 and pour some Jack Daniels into it, then I no longer have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101. That bottle is now a blend.

I think you're f-ing with me. Which is fine. Because I have a dram in hand:
