What would happen if breweries staggered limited beer releases?

Say a brewery like toppling goliath claimed they had 500 bottles of kbbs, sold it to rabid beer nerds in a days time. Then a month later sold another 2000 bottles that they chose not to say they had originally.

Technically the brewerys aren't Fortune 500 companies and beer trading should not be like the stock market but at the state of the current crappy beer trading world I could see people who got one of the first 500 actually being extremely upset that more was released.

The kiwi Herman release today got me thinking, how mad would people who got bottles today be if next week they released another 500 then the week after that released another 500 then a month from now they made them available at the brewery? Probably pretty mad.

In a nutshell, how many folks are buying beer to hold hostage and how many are buying them to drink.

Has a brewery ever done this?

I bet they would be pretty mad. I also bet that they would find very little sympathy amongst the general public.

Bugger the general public - they would find very little sympathy among the regular BA'ers on here - only the whale traders would give a shit

sorry, and to answer the OP's question, I don't know of anyone brewery that has ever done that. I mean, the BCBS release this year had some barleywine from last year mixed in, so that obviously sat in a warehouse for a year. Just anecdotal, but I suspect the hype and fanatical chase is more about marketing for the brewery than it is for actual fair distribution.

It'd be highly...disingenuous(?) of a brewery to lie about availability regardless of the scenario.

To your point, though, only people who trade and want their 'whalz''value inflated as much as possible would be upset about this. I got shut out of the Kiwi Herman BPT thing--you think I'd be heartbroken if they all the sudden had more available?

What percentage of BA's are we talking, though? Anyone ever done a poll to see percentage of BA's who trade vs. don't? I'd venture to guess most don't.

Trade or whale trade? I mean, I trade - in a few weeks I am in SF for work and I am trading some FFF and Pipeworks for Russian River, but they aren't whales - just awesome beers we both can't get locally. Even though I trade I would still think it funny if the whalez bro's got screwed out of their epic inflated values...

Sorry. I don't really trade so I don't have a trader mentality and I'm most of the way through a 10.7% abv bomber of Dissident so all I can think about it right now is, "@#$% those a-holes" either way. I'd probably try not to offend so much if not for that last part and the fact that I got shut out of Kiwi Herman which is already showing up on FT boards. Oh well.

What if a brewery made a double barrel variant of their most sought after beer only for exclusive club members. Then a little later they sold it by the case to the public? How would people react?

I see no difference if they release 1000 at once, or 500 twice. No one cares

The best thing about this thread is how it unites so many of us BAs in a speculative feeling of schadenfreude directed at the clowns who only see, smell and taste rare.

more like buy and trade rare. The fact there is not a single review or rating for Kiwi Herman and many bottles already locked down in trades speak to this

Yeah, I mean, what the hell - has anyone ever tasted this? It isn't like it double barrel H or something.
One day the whalez bros will end up with cases of infected crap, although even then, someone will probably naively trade for it... I will stick to my 'taste the whales through luck and karma' method

I feel for you on the shut out, but on the bright side Dissident is awesome, and I am polishing off a Backwoods Bastard, so it isn't like we are suffering here without the whales :grinning:

The whale hunt & trading game is just too much stress - you are better off just enjoying the beers you can get more easily!

If a given limited release makes it to my area to begin with, they usually have limits of 1-2/customer. So I'll get 1, or maybe 1 to drink and another to age.
As far as others, personally I'd love to see the looks on the faces of hoarders when a brewery reveals another bunch of bottles a few weeks after the fact...their dozens of ill-begotten bottles suddenly worthless, and many more able to enjoy a beer they otherwise might not have been able to find.
Every time I miss a release, I say "eh, I should just stick to the plenty of shelf beers and locals that are just as good" but then at the next release I find myself once again calling my stores and seeing if they're going to get their 1-case allocation of it or not...maybe I'll eventually give up, but that day hasn't come yet. For now, I'll continue to seek the whales, and try to be as fair as possible to other seekers.

Well, if it's an IPA we're talking about, you'd better release that shit all at once immediately or else the second round of the release won't matter as much. As for all other styles, it doesn't matter. In fact, when it comes to the much-anticipated Cold Mountain here in NC, they stretch it out over three days which is a pretty ideal way to go about it.
