Fellow BA's, let me just thank you guys up front for your input. Rare seems to be the mecca of beers out there (and King Henry in some cases) and i'm not sure what i'd have to give up to get one. I know that I could just put out an ISO:FT for this, but i'm not sure that i'm willing to give up a LARGE combo of quality beer for just one bottle of EPIC stuff (although I really want to try this stuff). The trader would have to be willing to get quantity for the highest of quality. SO, here's where you guys come in. What combo of the following beers would I have to give up to score the legend that is... Rare. I have the following:

    2011 Dark Lord
    2012 Dark Lord
    2011 Darkness
    2011 Event Horizon
    2011 Lindley Park
    Better Half
    2012 Sexual Chocolate
    GI Big John
    Bruery Flimishmish
    FFF Baller Stout
    Bruery Cuir
Bruery Melange #3 (if a trader ever makes good on his half)
    Bruery Oude Tart
    CCB Marshal Zhukov 2011
    Epic - Big Bad Baptist 2010 & 2011
    Cantillon Classic Gueuze
    DFH 120
    DFH 75
    DFH Bitches Brew 2010 & 2011
    BBA Peoples Porter
    OA Yeti
    Choc Yeti
    Terrapin Wake n Bake
    Abyss 2010 & 2011
    50/50 Ecplise Brandy (Red Wax)

Threadshit lightly, i'm not a vet at this...

A better question might be "is there ANY combo on this list that will get Rare". There may not be anything/combo on here that'll do it

I'm not sure you could score a Rare without putting up a good amount of that list. Cherry picking off the top - the most valuable beers in your list are probably Sexy Chocolate, Bruery Melange #3, and the Brandy Eclipse. Those 3 beers together might or might not be enough to pull in a Rare nowadays.

The problem with whales (and yes, I'm ready to call Rare a whale), is it is really hard to pull off the quantity-over-rarity thing. People are willing to bite on quantity when they feel like they can replace a beer down the road, but if not, rarity is usually the only thing that moves it. The window is probably closing soon on quantity-for-Rare, if not already, so it's going to be tough...

The other problem is I don't even know how many Rares are even up for trade now. I have one Rare sitting in the cellar, and it's not going anywhere because I intend on drinking it in a couple of years. I imagine many of the Rares still floating around out there are now in a similar boat.

your problem is that many who have bottles still have already had the beer and understand how special it is. they are not going to let is go for what you have on offer as those can be obtained for less.

Based on what I had to offer to get a Rare trade done I don't think that list has anything that will pull it unless someone looking for quantity would be willing to trade a Rare for a very large quantity of the listed beers. Just my thoughts.

I traded one for Abacus, but that was right when they both came out and I love BWs! Seems to have gone up in demand since then. The only way you'll know if you can land one is post your list in the ISO/FT forum and see what happens! Worst case, your thread drops to page 3 by morning.

It probably would... but I think you're right, even if I would have tried 6 months ago, it would've been better than trying now. The more time that goes on, the less chance I have

I'll chime in. I hate to say it but I wouldn't trade rare for any of those as I have had or have the majority of them.....and I think most with rare are probably in the same situation.

HA! Sadly I have been waiting on another trader to come through with a Melange #3 he owes me since Feb.... Not calling you out bro! That was pretty cool that we could get that one done though, always wanted to try it.

Unless you have a wax-topped, barrel-aged bottle of something with a low bottle count, it's going to take a lot to get one....I was close to trading half my freaking cellar for one and just said the hell with it and bought one on Ebay for $140....And no, it's not for trade

I recently traded a Rare for 4 X Beat b5. Both parties were happy and now I have a few Beats to cellar. My opinion is there are still Rare's out there available for trade but the beers listed above aren't going to make it happen.

If you can make it to BASC whenever that is, that should help a lot. Even so it'll take a lucky combo of a bunch of stuff I think.

There's always tastings, too - not to pile on from missing the Friday tasting at SC this year, but there was a Rare there.

It just takes the right person at the right time .... and I honestly NEVER thought I would score a single RARE let alone two (especially so long after the release).

I traded for a RARE twice in the last 4-5 months. One time was 1for1 for a Snake River Le Serpent (not hyped, but definitely a hell of a lot more rare) ... and the other was for quantity of Deschutes Reserve stuff.

I think both times both parties walked away pretty stoked.

Right person/right time and cool beers get spread into other loving arms.

Just remember there are good folks out there.... Don't get discouraged.

I honestly don't think it's worth giving up a large number of the beers you have. Granted I have never had Rare, but you have a ton of quality stuff as is and I feel like trading a bunch of them for a Rare would be silly. I mean, objectively, how much better than KBS, Event Horizon, Melange 3, Abyss, Eclipse, and even regular BCBS can it actually be?

You are absolutely right and I am just using guesswork. I just remember how excited I was to try CBS, KBS, BT, ect. and how much praise the recieved, and while they were all amazing, at the end of the day a beer can only taste so good (if that makes sense). I'm sure Rare is great, hell phenomenal even, but i can't picture taste that much better than the '08 BCBS that I had a few months ago.

08 BCBS is past the on the way down phase. No way is 2008 BCBS better than Rare. Thats a fact.
  35. tewaris

You're right as well. But for someone who has had all of the said beers, it might not be a bad deal offering a combo for a more desirable beer if they can afford it. To drink with a tasting group? Or to simply tick?

I would never go after Rare because I can't afford it... in fact, if I may quote my review:

" I wonder though that how much does it differ from a well cellared 08 BCBS? Is it really worthy of the tag? I doubt it.

    Is it good? Fuck yeah!"
  36. aasher

Definitely a lot more impressive than KBS and Bourbon County is too similar. Those other beers aren't even in the same class of quality. The Event Horizon is a joke.

If you can't trade for it soon, I wouldn't bother. Just start hyping up a local beer so you can trade for the Wheat Whiskey Bourbon County, whenever it gets released.

I wouldn't have believed it had I not actually watched this In-Person trade happen, of course this happened when the Event Horizon hype was at its peak
