What's the oldest beer that you've seen on the shelves?

Most of these types of threads focus solely on IPAs...not this one. My example is an IPA, which is bad. However, stouts and barleywines aren't necessarily a bad thing when the store "ages" it a little for you :sunglasses:. What's the oldest you've seen in a retail store??

Was browsing a beer store in my locale today and I came across this:

I had to double take. Almost a full 9 months old. There was a full row of about 5 four packs just sitting on the shelf...all dated the same.

Curious, is this typically a distribution house issue (just sitting on beer prior to delivery), a retail store's issue (sitting on unsold beer - for roughly 2-9 months in this instance), or a combination of both?

Also, does the brewery get paid in any instance? Are they paid for their beers upon delivery to distribution warehouses, or after the fact once a retail store orders/it is delivered to retail? I'm assuming they get paid upon delivery to the distro warehouse...or else we'd see the breweries taking action to ensure their beers hit shelves fresh.

Anyway, what'd the oldest - good or bad - you've seen??

I grabbed a bottle of GI Matilda and Sofie with early 2012 bottle dates today and there were more Sofie on the shelf.

And those old Firestone Walker beers are quite common over here in New England. We don't even get them until they're at least a month or 2 old.

EDIT: I'm excluding beers that were purposely aged. A local bottle shop in my area put out a 2008 Stone IRS and a 2007-13 Ommegang Three Philosophers.

And EDIT again: I bought a bottle of Pannepot from 2011 yesterday as well.

Oldest for me was a 6 year old Rochefort 10. It was still good, no complaints. Though I've never had it fresh, so I can't say how it compares. In Albuquerque the more expensive beers tended to just sit forever and collect dust, so all of the ones I had were at least 3 years old. I should see if I can find a fresh one now that I live in Florida.

4 Mikkeller Blacks covered in dust at local last resort liquor store. We didn't get Shelton brothers for around 2 years and no Black until last week so they're 3+ years old. They've been sitting there in front of a huge window so I doubt they're any good.

Bought a bottle of Sam Adams triple bock in 2008. Was at least ten years old. Poured from the bottle like coagulated blood and tasted like soy sauce.

It's pretty funny you post this, because the local pizza shop I go to that also carries beer NEVER has fresh brew from Firestone Walker. They've had a sixer of Union Jack in the cooler that was bottled back in December 2013.

There is a good liquor store near me that has 2006 Bon Chien on the shelf right now. I also found 2006 WWS around 2010 in a liquor store aimed at selling cheap booze to college, got two bottles for $10 a piece.
