That was a bit premature. 2 out of the 3 cans I enjoyed and thought were decent. Even stranger cause they all came from the same 4-pack...

glamorous shot but ridiculously good beer

if anything Cantillon have heavily stepped up their game as I've noticed all beers made in the last 2 or so years have been much improved/modernised.

Still got the limey sour hops there but they take a back seat to the blue cheese funk which is ridiculously developed for such a relatively young gueuze

Way more balanced than previous young vintages too and if anything has a sweetness to counteract the aggressive lime/sourness combination.

Need to try a vintage bottle at some point to compare but this was insanely good and way better than I was expecting.

 

Dat $16 2011 vintage.

Think this is only coming into its own now. I remember I used to find it excessively blue cheese funk driven and oaky.

Menthol and subtle herby chartreuse up front. Still a lot of oak but it's mellowing and taking a back seat to some differently woody oxidation. The funk has less blue cheese and more fruit and I would say the beer is tasting brighter than ever.

This actually tastes less oxidised than the last bottle I had but to be fair probably neither were stored in completely ideal conditions. I definitely don't mind the result though. Also I don't find the body as noticeably thin this time round.

 

If anyone has seen Kaiju Krush! cans in Sydney please let me know! Is it exclusive to Melbourne or something?

 

Shit purchase for $65 (maybe that was the Rye and this was more like $45 but point remains), lots o' regret.

Mellower and more drinkable version of founders RIS with less vegemite on the palate. More vinous but also more unpleasant marshmallow. Notably a bit oxidised.

Really not worth the price considering the partial barrel-aging and the fact I don't particularly enjoy classic harsh RISes anymore.

If I wanted an oxidised stout Samuel Smith's are always waiting in the wings and for far cheaper...

 

First time trying and really enjoying.

Good counterpoint to Mamouche.

More elderflower aromatics upfront, slightly rubbery Lindeman's house profile, more sour on the taste and less funky and more drinkable overall.

Wouldn't necessarily bother ageing this one as it doesn't have the funk to carry it long distances in my opinion. Still a very tasty elderflower aroma and perhaps a little bit more entry-level than Mamouche.

 

Insane barleywine/old ale character. There's just a beautiful refined malt sweetness to this with earthy figs, dark chocolate and other dark fruits. Understated port/red wine sweetness to it and reminds me of everything that first appealed to me about Quads but somehow amplified and without any of their bad qualities. Taste carries a subtle dried out roast that prevents any cloying sweetness. Leagues ahead of Abyss.

Saison Dupont Dry Hopping (Golden Promise) - very lovely, more of a superfluous riff on the normal one than last year's straight out inferior beer.

Alesmith IPA. Now an official import? I have one more bottle. Hope it's better than the first. Disappointed.

HopDog A Feast of Stevens - "smoky white stout" - clever, subtle, tasty. About the best beer from them I've had.

Hanssens Oudbeitje - You know those services where they come and squirt your wheelie bin with boiling water because of the stench of rotting garbage? How much are they then? I tipped it out and stil felt bad the next day.

Black Heart Imperial Stout - nobody has reviewed this here? For me one of the better strong stouts here (I score it higher than Wild Thing, Ramjet or Mt Goat RB IS).

Cavalier Double Life IIPA - IIPAs often fall down either as sweet and muddled or abrasive. This is the former.

Collective Arts Ransack the Universe IPA - stunning. I really liked the porter too.

 

the Dale's Pale Ale at Dan's is stale and shit...

should have known when the guy was reluctant to find/give it to me...I forgot it was presumably American dating format (rookie error) and is 6 months instead of 3 months old

proud to say I have two peanut butter flavoured stouts in the fridge...should do a side by side at some point.

MG orange IPA is going down quite nicely...where the IPAs at yo? Haven't seen many coming out of late.

 

Had Liberty Knife parts and hoptical illusion at DTC for "Waitangi week",

the kiwi insipired food was excellent,
and the knife party is bloody excellent

 

buxton extra porter is in the same sphere as fbs. there i said it. of course i always buy fbs whenever i see it because it is just unbeatable in terms of value for money.

I also bought a 4-pack of war hog but I've already smashed it so it's in the past now isn't it? it was very good too. I think fresh and well-made IPAs make you younger. give all your money to Feral and fuck off all the shitcunts who make shit IPAs like Murray's, New England et al.

Damn, going to have to get on to that Buxton. They have been doing some pretty good stuff.

 

Hop Nation - The Chop is a good crack at the current hazy ipa craze. Massive amounts of grapefruit on the aroma and palate. Tasty as.

EDIT: Any Victorians get their hands on the latest batch of La Sirine's Urban Pale cans? Wondering whether a trip up to Slowbeer is on the cards this week.

 

bridge road- the ipa with tea and brett- pretty tasty but a little inbetween.

2mt Derwent- extremely enteric, lots of crushed sea shells. Devolves into Haribo sour gummy bears. Extremely good and challenging sour. Quite unique.

Arrogant Bastard cans- White Rabbit Dark Ale with more malt and more amber malt specifically

Yeastie Boys Bigmouth- lots of ridiculous apple pie "session IPA" character but with a decent dose of hops

 

Sauce Brewing Co "Hop Sauce" Pale Ale - Lovely pale golden colour, slight haze. On the nose it's classic american pale ale, even has that slight 'catty' smell that a lot of west coast beers have. I want to say theres cascade in it, but I keep flip flopping on that. Drinks a touch lighter than the aroma suggests, tasty though.

Sauce Brewing Co "Saucy" Saison - Damn good saison, manages to have an underlying sweetness to go with the dry finish and high carbonation.

Urban Pale is the best saison La Sirene have ever done by a long way...

 

They sure are cranking out the saisons. Apparently they speak well of Premiere (which is calling me from the fridge) and there's a US only release too. FWIW, I have Urban Pale as my equal 9th favourite saison from them.

 

I never rated their base saisons, their yeast was always really harsh and one note. It seems like for urban pale they remembered that saisons are supposed to be hoppy as well as yeasty

 

My wife spent a bit over a week down in Denmark and brought me back a couple of Growlers of beer from Boston Brewery. She knows the way straight to my heart

This one is the Afterglose Raspberry Gose. Plenty of fruit up front and a nicely balanced saltiness on the end. Very nice beer.

Almanac White Label- definitely get the coriander, bit milder on the acidity than their usual offerings which is a welcome change.

 

Gage Roads Little Dove - wow! Got it on a recommendation at a local bottle-o and it was amazing, a real peach bomb of an APA

fantome offer so much in terms of complexity and quality and are very reasonably priced for what they offer

 

I agree, the only issue I have with them is I've had a few bottles of theirs that have been massively under carbonated leading to a very syrupy mess. Possibly just a touch unlucky.

 

All I ever get from the base saison is lemon, lemon and more lemon. It's not terrible, but forgettable.

On local saisons I have been impressed with Boatrocker's base saison. The yeast character is great (almost DuPont like) and there's still a touch of malt and hop character.

 

Had Cheeky Monkey Imperial monk IIredpa,
darned nice
and the Mash saison "contradiction" weirdly unusual flavours,
but quite enjoyable

 

Stumbled upon some BFH, oh so good.

 

Haven't had a decadent treat like this in a while.

Loaded with figs, muscatels, panforte and moving into glacé cherries and blue cheese. Lots of grapey goodness. Really good blend. Very drinkable in spite of the ABV.

 

I cant believe anyone on here would admit to liking Golden stout time,
I thought it was a one-sip wonder.
had BA Ten Fidy on weekend, delicious,
but would be much better in a standard size can
oh buddy, it gave me weird body ache the next day

 

I didn't mind Golden Stout Time. Good flavours for a low abv stout.

Ended up grabbing a squealer of the NZIPA from Feral. Bit too sweet for me. Needed some dry hopping to bring out more of the IPA characteristics I love.

Can't get enough of Hop Nation's The Chop. This is a fucking brilliant IPA. The malt bill seems a lot lighter than a lot of other Australian IPA's which allows the fresh flavours of the hops to stand out. Try this one if you haven't already.

Kaiju Krush finally made it's way West. I loved it. Could smash about 22 on a hot summers day.

Death by Coconut - hmmmm. Plenty of coconut but just reminded me of Malibu.

Jai Alai - Grabbed a squealer from DTC. First time I have tried. A really solid IPA. Flavours weren't huge for the abv but the balance was spot on.

Beer Can (Moon Dog) - See Kaiju Krush

Hashtag Hop Hash - Spiked at DTC. Really benefiting from its freshness. Hop flavours are great with sweet malt. I think over time the malt will drown it out, but all IPAs should be judged fresh.

 

Boatrocker Blonde - I enjoyed this a lot. Super drinkable, great yeast character that works well with the sourness at the end. Could drink pints and pints of it. Pity it's $20 a bottle.

La Sirene Urban Pale - enjoyed this as well, though I don't share La Sirene's love of Nelson Sauvin hops.

Ten Fidy - delicious, 'nuff said.

 

Fanta Pants and Springbank 15. Great combo. Fanta Pants is tasting real fresh, better than it was on tap.

 

Shenanigans Hoppy Gonzales - excellent aromatics. I'm actually finding it a little dry for my tastes these days and almost wishing it was more in the vein of Malt Assault...excellently made beer though, only the second time bottles have come out and it's already a classic in my mind...paired with Hazelburn 9 yo Barolo cask which has awesome amaretto and tropical fruits.
