When you have more than one brew in a sitting

    Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA is my favorite 'go-to' brew. When I can get my hands on a 4-pack of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, I'll grab it and put the bottles in my fridge. I keep the 120 for 'special occasions' such as a birthday, or maybe New Year's eve?

    But what if I want to have more than one beer in a sitting?
    There are certain brews that I consider worthy of being drunk following another certain brew.
    For example:
    I will always drink a more bitter beer (most IPA's) following a less bitter one. I think my point is obvious here.
    But when I drink a deep flavored IPA like Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, there are only a few brews that I can follow it with:
    Another Dogfish Head 90
    A Dogfish Head 120
    A Flying Dog Double Dog.

    There are most likely several more brews I could add to my list, and thus this post.
    What beers would you consider drinking following a Dogfish Head 90?

    Thanks for your suggestions, and enjoy whatever you're drinking now!

    Ultrarunner - who hasn't run an ultra in... how long has it been?? Gotta get back into training

    I agree that big beers like DFH90 should be consumed at the end of a session. An alternative approach with be to take a food and water break in between beers to reset the palate. Cheers.

    Ever since I learned to drink a lot of water between beers, or any other alcoholic beverage, I forgot about “hangover”.

    After a DFH 90 you can only go to so many places, but I'd say an Imperial stout or barleywine would be appropriate.

    This would have been my reply as well. During weekends when we might go for 2-3 beers, it's almost always alternating styles. Stout/IPA/barleywine is one that has been very kind to us.

    Last night I had a mini/impromptu Barleywine fest in my kitchen. Dug deep into the cellar stash. Three vintage beers - smaller 12oz and less formats. Shared w/a friend. Highly recommend mid week multi beer sessions! [IMG]

    This is actually contrary to my approach. If I'm going to be drinking a DIPA, imperial stout, barleywine, etc. I typically start my night with them and try to gradually move to lower ABV beers as the night progresses.

    Isn't this kind of similar to the adage, "liquor before beer, you're in the clear"? I understand from a palate perspective why going from an IPA to a lager isn't ideal, but I find that it doesn't take long for my palate to "reset."

    I love a lager after a stout, Barleywine 2IPA tastes delicious and cleanses the palate. 2nd choice is a fruited sour, it also for me tastes great.

    Agree that you move less hoppy to more hoppy as the night goes. Light to dark.
    My order usually goes: pale lager, then ale, then IPA. I would do a stout/porter after an IPA.
    Since an IPA is more hoppy than a stout/porter, I guess I go by the light to dark rule rather most of the time.

    Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick...where to begin...???

    First, I never have a set beer list, style-wise, ABV-wise, or anything-wise...I drink what the muse directs me to...

    Second...hydration...something I champion yet rarely practice...but I'm learning...

    Thirdly, I circle back to my first point -- I drink what I want...and "want" may be something sober and sensible, and it may be something stupid and crazy...I'm sensibly idiotic that way...:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

    My primary sessions include:

    DFH 120min->
    DFH Raison D’Extra->
    DFH 120min->
    DFH WWS

    The only acceptable session substitution is:
    BCBS->
    Cantillon Classic Gueuze (low ABV break)->
    Black Tuesday (bombers only)

    I have no qualms drinking random ass beers. I did have an issue drinking a myrcenary from Odell after an all Citra APA I brewed at home. The myrcenary tasted like tomatoe plants after the Citra bomb I had before. It was crazy.

    I think instead of another beer right away, I might go with crackers, cheese, and charcuterie meats. Then I'd start cracking imperial stouts and strong ales and whatnot. This is usually how our shares go, at least to some degree. There might be food substitutions like chili or something, but the IPA's (if any) are usually knocked off before the big guns come out.

    I never drink more than one beer in a sitting unless it's a share, so it's not something I've given much thought to.

    Most taster trays only equal 1 beer anyway, so, it's not really an issue.
