I was just doing some analysis on my 305 beers I've reviewed so far and stumbled upon the fact that I really don't rate APA (American Pale Ales) all that highly. Only had 1 bad one but none rank in my top 50 beers and most all I just think are average. so I went to look at the APAs that the BA board ranked and it was head and shoulders that Zombie Dust seemed way ahead of the other APAs out there (with substantial reviews...I don't count the beers with 50 or less reviews). So with out me geeking out tonight and researching every beer catagory, which ones have a beer that is a "tier 1" all alone without any competition.

    APA: Mirror Pond Pale Ale
    Tripel: Westmalle Tripel

I find it much harder to say without a doubt on many of the other styles. I'd venture to say Orval for the "I'm not sure style" just because it's so damn good.

    American Amber/Red Ale: Nugget Nectar
    Berliner Weisse: Southampton
    Dopplebock: Ayinger Celebrator
Black IPA: Stone Sublimely Self Righteous
Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy: Founders Backwoods Bastard
Rye Beer: Two Borthers Cane & Ebel
    APA: Daisy Cutter

These are beers in my top 100 that do not have another repeat of that style

Mirror Pond can't hold a candle to Zombie Dust. Not even close. I feel like Daisy Cutter deserves an honorable mention, but it's not close to ZD either.

Not that it needs any more hype, but Bourbon County is the best BA stout out there.

Also, King Henry doesn't seem to have an equal when it comes to BA barleywines.

Really Brutha... Zombie Dust, while a FANTASTIC BEER strays from the style and leans towards IPA rather than APA.

Within 3+ months age you have a malty mess whereas SNPA and Mirror Pond at that age don't taste "THAT" much different from fresh.

For the record, I rated a fresh bottle of ZD around A+ status. I found RRBC's Row 2 / Hill 56 a better specimen of the "APA" style, although both are a pure joy to drink.

As for the original question...Bourbon County Rare and vintage 2008 have been above and beyond any other Imperial Stout or Barrel Aged Stout for my palate...not saying I'm right or wrong, just what I found for my preference.

    Cheers!

I love Nugget Nectar. It is head and shoulders above any other beer in the category. Except for Laguintas Imperial Red which is pretty damn close.

None. I don't think there's any beer in any style that is leagues ahead of all other beers in that style.

ZD is pretty good, but RR makes at least 3 Pales that are just as good. I'm sure if they did one with Citra it would be better.

APA- Hill Farmstead Edward and then Zombie Dust
    DIPA- Heady Topper
    Lambic Kriek- Cantillon Lou Pepe
Single Hop Ipa- Hill Farmstead Double Galaxy

APA can surely be debated but the other styles I personally think they have pulled away from the competition.

I don't agree with most of the responses. Most probably wont agree with mine, but Rumpkin I find in a different class than all other pumpkin beers. I think I've had most of the notable ones, and I straight up don't like a lot of them. I'm borderline obsessed with Rumpkin, however.

Have you had G'knight? I also love Lagunitas Imp Red, but loved G'knight even more. Try it if you haven't!
