The spigot probably is sanitized after the boil, but it makes me nervous after cooling. I carry my kettle to another room after the boil and I don't want to deal with the hoses for that. I add the IC to ~211* water which should more than sanitize any part that gets submerged.

I was thinking if one have a recirculating mash pump, a plate chiller, and a pond pump: They could use tap on the plate chiller to chill to 80, then use a pond pump and recirculate ice water on the plate chiller. Basically the same at the IC, but with a plate chiller.

    Yes, you could do that.

I agree with what several others say. To maximize space without being completely wasteful, I use a 25' copper immersion chiller in 5 gallon batches. Let it sanitize by sitting in the last 10 minutes of the boil. I fill my sink with tap water and use a cheap utility pump from harbor freight to recirculate the water. Once the water in the sink feels very warm, I empty it and refill. Perhaps repeat one more time until the wort temp is in the 90's. Then, empty the water, fill sink with a 10lb bag of ice and some more tap water.

Definitely make sure that you empty your sink of warm water before putting ice in

Corb: yes, that was what I was thinking but I am setting up to do this- www.mrmalty.com/chiller.php

Since doing 10 gallon brews it takes about 25-30 min to cool and that is with 55 deg well water. Recirculating the wort and forcing it thru the coils makes the IC much more efficient.
