Your Worst Hangover From Craft Beer...and What Caused It

I got to thinking today about some of my worst hangovers from craft beer after reminiscing about my trip to Oktoberfest in another thread. And while we should always respect beer, sometimes we don't. Especially when we first get into craft and don't realize what a punch that "one" barrel-aged imperial stout can deliver.

My worst...at least the first one that comes to mind...was after Oktoberfest in Munich. I was somewhat hungover to start the day from my first day/night in Munich, but in order to get a seat in the tents (without a reservation) you need to get there early. So we snagged a seat in the Paulaner tent around 9:30 am and started drinking at 10 am.

7 liters of Paulaner Oktoberfestbier later, I decided it was probably time to go home around 4 or 5ish in the afternoon (I forget, obviously). I took a Pedicab back to the train station in downtown Munich, grabbed some Burger King...and well I didn't get on the train just yet.

Munich is a melting pot of cultures during Oktoberfest, so I ended up meeting an Englishman and we kept drinking at one of the hotels there. We tried to imitate each other's accents (I'm from Boston), and he sloppily kept saying, "The Depahhted" (the movie "The Departed" had just come out I think) and I replied (incorrectly), "Put another shrimp on the barbie!".

From there I continued to drink with some Australians (they also party hard) at the hotel bar. And finally I went "brothel-hopping", not to do anything bad (I'm serious), but just to check them out and hang out with prostitutes and drink champagne with them.

Eventually I took a cab back to the wrong hotel (I gave the cab driver the address from the hotel card I had, but it was their sister hotel on the other side of the city...apparently there were two sides to the card), and then took ANOTHER cab back to my actual hotel.

I woke up in the morning running to the bathroom ripping my contacts out of my blood shot eyes and throwing up in the toilet. I spent the entire day in bed during a beautiful day in Munich, but eventually made it back out with my friends for dinner and more good times.

    Prost!

Personally it has never involved craft beer - at the risk of being repetitive; I drink two or three and feel no hangover the following morning.

Back when I was younger and more careless (possibly stupid too) then yes, I have bad memories of Strong euro lager in great quantity.

That said, crappy wines or whiskey were by far the worst.

When I first got into craft I had an entire six pack of Sweetwater Hop Hash Double IPA in one setting. I knew I was starting to really like pales and IPA's, but I didn't fully comprehend that a double IPA meant higher ABV, I thought it just meant it tasted more hoppy. I put away an entire sixer of Sweetwater 420 in one setting without feeling like death the next day, so I figured I could do the same with this beer. I was wrong.

I remember drinking a six pack of Victory at Sea within an evening that led to a particularly awful hangover, I think the sweetness combined with alcohol is what makes that one memorable. There are lots of nights I drank a mixed sixer of various high ABV imperial stouts and DIPA's that left me feeling gross. Lots of beer and not enough water tends to have that effect

If I drink too many IPAs/DIPAs I can count on a pretty awful next day...and these days it isn't really that many, 2-4 can do me in. But two incidents come to mind quickly: a Christmas party where I had a crazy mix of beers and some bad foods [for me] and once on a date where I had a mix of beers that would turn anyone's stomach...we were having fun and kept drinking and I wasn't paying much attention and just looking at the list and saying, "Ah yeah this sounds good, I will have this next."

I don't remember the details, but I did learn that no matter how hot is it and how good it tastes, putting myself on the other side of a full sixer of Brown Sugga is not a wise move.

Craft beer pong is a bad idea. What were worse ideas were playing 1v1 and not paying attention while my opponent shot. He sunk two in a row in the same cup, so I had to chug the entire collection all at once. It was a mixture of IPA's (one was a triple), and I was hammered at 4:30pm on a Thursday. Next morning for work was hell.

    2 come to mind.

3 cans of Lupulin Hooey is a really bad move for me. I think the insane amount of hops really make me sick, and, boy, was I the next morning. Work was hell that day.

Another was a BBQ at a friend's place. After a ton of BBQ, and a ton of beer, including a shit on of BA beers, I was extremely sick the next morning. I was puking, outside, during a torrential rain storm because of it.

Haven't had a hangover since freshman year in college, craft beer or otherwise. The 1-2 hangovers I had then from too many Euro and Canadian pale lagers (and many games of quarters) in a night were enough for a lifetime.

The question "what caused it" rather answers itself. In my experience you can get whacked off most any style brew if you really try hard enough.

When Victory first released Hop Ranch, I had it at the source on draft. I liked it so much that I purchased a case of it when it came out in bottles. I remember trying to drink two 4-packs during the NFL playoffs; I believe I ended up consuming seven beers that night. Needless to say, at 9% ABV, I felt like I got ran over by a truck the next morning. That lasted until I had some more Hop Ranch later that day. I won't even drink that beer now, but let me tell you, I was in love with it for a very short period. It was LARRRGE.

Mixing beer and distillates is never a good idea, but adding wine to that mix is "danger, danger, go to your room". I'll not do that again. Oddly, the night before my first and only go at the SAT, we drank copious quantities of Schlitz. I felt like dog schlitz on Saturday AM. Also, oddly, while not giving a schlitz about this is to this as this is to this, I did over 1400 and was stunned. They must have made a mistake, but I didn't report them!

This was around 2011 I believe. A friend had a bachelor party/get together. The night started at the hotel drinking a few beers then we ate at the Dogfish Head Brewpub. We had 3 or 4 rounds of various beers there (mostly high abvs I'm sure...I remember having a Burton Baton and a 90 minute). Before we left a few of us splint a few bottles of World Wide Stout, then I got a growler fill of their Shelter Pale ale because they had just stopped distributing it. We went back to the hotel and continued drinking a bunch of beers he brought back from Florida where he was living at the time. This included a ton of Cigar City (which had very limited distribution at the time) and I was excited to try them all. Then we cracked open the Growler and finished that quickly. The last beer I remember drinking by myself was a bomber of Yeti Imperial stout....why was I drinking that by myself?

I later found out that after the party died down a bit, a few of us who were still awake headed back to Dogfish Head brewpub to watch some live music and had a few more beers (why didn't anyone stop this??). I was told we ordered some 120 to splint among us...but I don't remember.

The next day, I spent the whole morning throwing up and I felt like I was dying. I ventured to McDonald's hoping a greasy breakfast would solve the problem but ended up not helping at all. It was by far one of the worst craft beer hangovers. By the middle of the afternoon I was feeling better, but I had to drive home which was about an hour and half away. During the drive, I had to pull over multiple times to throw up and spent the entire ride with the windows down to cool off the hangover sweats.

Somehow I drank more and ended up the worst out of anyone including the guy who should have been drinking the most!

Surlyfest a couple years ago. I had free unlimited beer tokens, and Barrel Aged Pentagram was on tap. Free 16oz pours when a 22oz bomber is $28 after tax? Yeah I like that math, needless to say I drank ALOT. I honestly don't think I'd be underestimating in saying I had at least 20... Great at the time, but that's alot of brew, especially considering its a sour. The next day was difficult to say the least.

I was hanging hard the morning after the first time I tried Black Ale.
Two years ago, I was lucky to try a six-pack of Stone Enjoy by Black IPA abv. 9.4.
First I finished off my last Wormtown Be Hoppy while the Stone was chilling and then started in on the 6-er. A great beer, I would have given it a 4.5 if I was reviewing back then.
Five more beers later it was time to call it a night. It may have been the first time I drank any beer that strong. Had to get up earlier than usual the next morning with an awful headache and nausea.

At least I had one left to enjoy that night.

Nothing comes to mind. The nights I recall having a hangover usually end up with not only craft beer but also wine and/or scotch finding their way into the mix.

There are a couple times that amazingly/blessedly I did not have a craft beer hangover.

One time in my late 20s I spent a day on a boat on Norris Lake in TN. Some recent college grads decided to challenge me to a drinking competition and I was still young (dumb) enough to agree. I remember mostly drinking PIlsner Urquell with Negra Modelo and some craft being in the mix. 30+ beers later I made it through the day surprisingly well.

Another time in college a high school buddy came down and spent a weekend with me. We started the day at the Newport Hofbrauhaus as soon as they opened (10:00 am?) and closed out the college bars up by UC (Univ. Cincinnati) at 2:30 a.m. I remember going into a bar that night with some frat special of $5 all-you-can-drink Miller Lite. After an hour or so we got ill and thought of calling it a night, but instead went to another place with craft and quickly regained our stamina!

Awesome thread. Beer is generally fairly self limiting for me since it tends to make me feel full after 3 or 4 and I'll move on to something else if I want to keep drinking (if this were bourbon advocate i'd have some stories).

I did, however, once drink a whole six pack of Torpedo in under 3 hours one night and woke up the next morning with possibly the worst headache of my life. One of those brutal ones where it feels like there's extra room in your skull for your brain to crash around in while someone, or something, slowly crushes your eyeballs.

Come to think of it maybe this is why I don't care much for Torpedo.

In college, we went to a concert and ordered a couple of buckets of beer. One of some AAL, and one of a local APA in pint-sized cans at 5.6%. Everyone else in the group drank the AALs, so I had 4-5 of the APAs myself. My wife also got me a pint of a local Irish Stout, and I hadn't ever drank any dark beer in my life up until that point. I may have had an AAL from the other bucket as well, I'm not sure.

It doesn't sound too crazy, but that was the only time in my life I felt like dying and throwing up the entire next day. It probably doesn't help that this was at a bar that still allowed smoking indoors, and people were definitely taking them up on that offer. Of course, I was probably only 21. After that day, I learned my limits.

The funny part is, I had to cancel dinner with the dean and his wife because I felt too sick to leave the house. I got the invitation for good grades.

My worst craft beer hangovers seem to be more of the result of eatting too much really bad food in combination with beers, and not necessarily having too many beers.
    - Night of eating 3 hot/spicy Italian sausages at a firepit didn't end well.
    - Eating Maryland crabs w/ Old Bay has given me some bad days
    - Dozen buffalo wings with hot sauce (at least 2-3 occassions)...another sick next morning

I think eating stuff with too much salt/preservatives in combo with beer adds to extra dehydration or something internal going on with me personally. Others don't seem as affected.

It's so hard to moderate yourself with a good double IPA. Especially something as legendary as Heady. You can't get it often, so you want to make the most of it. If you're up in Burlington it's easier to find than water.

Then you do the math and realize one can is equal to over two beers. At that point you think, "I should switch to Focal Banger", which is "only" 7%...which doesn't really help.

    Fuck you IPAs.

You had 20 Pentagrams or the equivalent of 20 standard beers worth of Pentagram? Either way it's impressive.

I wish I were like this. Beer has never filled me up. Food doesn't really either, but that's another story.

I was pretty sick after my bachelor party. We went to Pizza Boy to start out, a brewfest that afternoon, then to a strip club in some lady's house (yes, you read that right). It was BYOB, so someone ended up going down the street to the closest bar and bringing back a 6 pack of Golden Monkey.
