Yuengling releases new year-round beer: Golden Pilsner

Yup, I'll be drinking this during the summer. Glad to hear cans are coming too.

 

I expect plenty of Golden Pilsner in my future. My father-in-law's house beer is Yuengling Lager, so I'll probably buy him a case. He likes most other Yuengling beers (except the IPL).

Regarding the IPL, I'm not surprised it was discontinued. It never fit well in their broader portfolio and wouldn't appeal to their core Traditional Lager-drinkers (~80-85% of their sales according to the article). Beer geeks may have liked the IPL, but we aren't loyal purchasers, even to the beers we say we like, and a brewery of Yuengling's size needs more dependability. The Golden Pilsner fits better in their overall portfolio and pilsner popularity is up lately, so it's good timing.

 

What does he think of Lord Chesterfield?

I see a side-by-side tasting of Lord Chesterfield vs. Golden Pilsner in my future.

Well this is some good news. Easily makes up for the loss of their summer hefeweizen, and then some! (i prefer lagers/pilsners over hefes)

Isn't Lord Chesterfield a lagered-ale sorta thing? I'd expect that (or at least hope that) Golden Pilsner will be a totally different animal from Lord Chesterfield, but what do I know

 

I have discussed this ad nauseam in several previous threads. Lord Chesterfield is fermented with a lager yeast. As far as I am concerned Lord Chesterfield is a lager.

Sorry that I did not read said 'several threads'. I can't be everywhere, you know (though I do try).

I remember there being something abnormal about the beer though. Is it warm fermented or not lagered very long? Perhaps I'm getting it confused with a different beer altogether.

He likes Lord Chesterfield. He is the archetypal Yuengling customer...nearly all the beer he buys is Yuengling, and mainly Traditional Lager, with occasional purchases of Lord Chesterfield, Premium, and variety cases; and he tried but never returned to the IPL and Summer Wheat. I suspect Golden Pilsner will be more in his wheelhouse, but we'll see.

 

Given what you have posted I would think he would like this beer as well. He seems to be more of a 'traditional' lager/beer drinker.

I found it interesting that in the video Jennifer Yuengling stated "refreshment category" twice. From my perspective Lord Chesterfield fits perfectly within this category.

Yuengling began fermenting Lord Chesterfield Ale with lager yeast at warm temperatures around 1960 - this process, resulting in a brew known within the industry as a "bastard ale", was very common in the pre-craft era when many breweries were not set up for using multiple yeasts (and, probably, the fact that ales in general had shrunk to under 2% of the US beer market by the 1960s was also a reason). LCA was hardly unique in this aspect.

It's why the legal definition of "ale" in the US (below) does not specify top or bottom fermenting yeast.

Other such ales in the US included Rainier Ale, Schoenling, Little Kings Cream Ale and Rheingold's version of McSorley's Cream Ale, etc. Likely today's Miller-brewed Ballantine XXX Ale from Pabst is also fermented with lager yeast.

Maybe I was thinking of a California Common-style beer. Isn't Ballantine Ale also brewed with lager yeast? @jesskidden would correct me if I'm wrong, i'm sure. I'm certainly not the homebrew ninja that you are, jack, but doesn't warm-fermenting with lager yeast result in a much higher carbonation presence than your typical cold conditioned lager? Appreciate the insight regardless.

EDIT: wow, and @jesskidden replies to my comment before he even knew I was calling for him. Not only is he an expert beer historian, he is a clairvoyant expert beer historian! Superb comment as always. Glad I'm not going crazy.

Yes, California Common beers are brewed using lager yeast at a warmer (e.g., 60 degrees F) temperature.

I know that other homebrewers have brewed with lager yeast (Wyeast 2124) at warm temperatures (e.g., 68 degrees F) and they have reported that the beers come out very clean (i.e., like a lager should be). I homebrew with 2124 a lot but I have never personally fermented warm with this strain.

And yes, JessKidden will indeed respond since he was the person that I sort of referenced earlier (i.e., ad nauseum). Yuengling is a brewery set up to brew lagers (e.g., Traditional Lager, Premium, etc,). Lord Chestefield has all of the attributes of a lager beer (I drink it regularly).

Cool. I'm just glad that my ADD failed and I somehow remembered that LC was warm fermented (even though I admit I forgot the fact it uses lager yeast). Thank you for clarifying, both of you.

 

I hope to discover whether that is still the case.

I spoke to the head brewer of Yuengling (John Callahan) for 15-20 minutes a few weeks ago at the Philly Bierfest. I neglected to ask this specific fermentation question. I did mention to him that Lord Chesterfield was one of my favorite lagers from Yuengling as I drank it and he agreed with me here.

I look forward to trying this latest lager (Golden Pilsner) from Yuengling.

Let's put it this way: I'm not a betting man and yet I'd be willing to bet that it is warm fermented (not gonna lie, @jesskidden backing me up on this has strengthened my confidence lol) Let me know if you find out; if I'm wrong I'll send you some beer or something.

Haven't tried a new pilsner in a while... I'll be looking out for this one.

Sad to hear that the Summer Wheat and IPL have been discontinued, though... it was pretty much unheard of to see beers on their level at Yuengling's prices. Was that just this past year (2017) that they stopped making those two? I could've sworn I saw the Summer Wheat on shelves last summer, but I don't recall the IPL ever showing up this winter. I think the local stores all switched to six-packs of Light Lager instead of the seasonals around that time.

 

Yep, Summer Wheat was out last summer so that was its final run. I'm sad to see it go, as it was a great beer for the price and an easy choice for BBQs and what not. But I love Pilsners and this one sounds like a winner and maybe even close to SA Noble Pils?

The IPL was just okay to me and I didn't drink it often.

I think in PA, the others (IPL and Summer Wheat) were about $28. I am thinking this will be of similar price.

 

I was paying around $24-26 for wheat and IPL and a few times on sale for $19.99. When wheat first came out it was 19.99 all the time but $ went up the next year.

I hope this new beer comes to Philly sooner. The distro does not show philly right away.

Had the wife do a blind side by side tasting with Premium and she guessed wrong. Taste almost exactly like Primo but with a little less of that familiar Yuengling "bite"? Seriously disappointed in this one.

bought a six pack of bottles at a grocery store (in Pottsville) for $6.49? probably same as lager bottles by the case at a local distributor.

 

It's an interesting product launch for sure. I was watching this video of an interview with one of the Yuenglings and thought it was was interesting since at around 3 minutes she mentions that their lager is 13 IBUs compared with this new beer at 18 ibus. It sounds like their 1980s traditional lager was quite well adjusted to modernity.

Patrik, when I can get my hands on this beer I plan on conducting a blind taste test of this beer vs. Lord Chesterfield (with the assistance of my wife). I will tag you on that post (likely a NBS post).

What the actual fuck? Summer Wheat isn't coming back? That has been one of my main summer go-to beers since it was introduced. It is (was?) a really good US Hefeweizen.

..and how is this new Golden Pilsner going to be different from their "Premium" which is also a Pilsner.

Where was it announced that Summer Wheat wouldn't be coming back? I mean, aside from it not being on the "seasonal beers" page of Yuengling's web site.

 

Didn't think Summer Wheat was all that great, so not having high expectations for the Pilsner. Will def. try it though.

I will never see the appeal of this brand. Everything they make is sub-par, apart from their Hef, which is perhaps serviceable. Yuengling Lager is one of the worst beers produced in America. I'll take a ice cold Bud over it any day of the week.
