Yeah you and I know both that Monk's gets crowded there! I remember though that I wanted to try Pliny the Elder for the first time so I just hopped the Patco from Collingswood then went to Hawthornes like a ninja, and of course I forgot it wasx New Years Day and was VERY busy there too!

Agreed! How do they normally handle Zwanze at Holy Grale? I need to make it down there this year

I went to Churchkey last year on sort of a last second whim. Four of us got there around noon, had no problem getting in, and sampled several different Cantillons on tap. We also had no problem purchasing tickets for the Zwanze beer. The place was crowded, but we got seats after ~30 minutes. The Cantillon didn't last long, and I don't think they were selling bottles. Overall a pretty great experience.

Anyone know the usual protocol for Zwanze at Hill Farmstead? Tickets sold in advance or just form a line outside day of? We'd be flying up from Georgia, but hoping for more info before solidifying travel plans.

Last year they did a lottery pre-sale, but I don't remember when they did it. I didn't get one myself, so I ended up at Novare Res and had a great time.

2013 it was pretty great, 2014 was a shit show. If you want a ticket to try the zwanze beer plan on being in line starting at 4am (possibly 3am), doors open at 8am this year. They've sold 125 tickets for the zwanze pour the past 2 years and thats always to the first 125 in line.

Does anyone know how Monk's usually goes about handling this day?

Is there any verification that it is actually a sour stout, or are people assuming based on the picture from Cantillon? My first thought when I saw said picture was that it would be something like tart of darkness or black angel cherry sour.

Literally the first post in this thread (by Todd, taken from, as he cites, Cantillon's very own Facebook page) says, in big bold letters, "Wild Brussels Stout ."

I don't mean to be rude, but you should really read the rest of the thread before asking a question that you could answer with just a little effort. I get that some threads get very long and it would require reading for hours to make sure you're not being redundant, but this one was a mere 68 posts (two pages) when you asked your question.

Also, Tart of Darkness is a sour stout. Black Angel is a sour "black ale," which I guess must be somewhere near a porter or something. It's a bit of a catch-all category, really.

@thanatopsis thanks for the reply, although you were kinda dickish about it. I also did read the whole thread before posting, I just didn't happen to see the part that said Wild Brussels's Stout. I hope whatever is stuck up your ass crawls back out so you can have a better day. I'm out, peace....

If like other events at monks it will be cash only. Lots of other great beers. Bring a lot of money as nothing will be cheap. The younger event always had amazing beer basket raffles. Food is good. Bar seats are few and it will be crowded. Have fun. I stopped going to these events as I really dislike crowds no matter how good the beer or how well the event is run.

Tom will post info so sign up for the email list or check the site.

    Enjoy

Any insight on the Avenue Pub release? I'll be in New Orleans a week before and thinking I might can stretch the trip if I think it's worth it. Not much info yet that I've found though.

I was thinking of attending Farm Aid this same day, but I may have to pass in favor of this. I'm shocked at how chill you say this is...considering this is Chicago where it can get crazy over so many different beer events. Hopefully I will get to experience it first hand this year.

Were the vintage bottle sales in the past a raffle type thing, or they just had them available for purchase?

If all you care about is getting the zwanze, I showed up at Holy Grale around 4:20 PM last year, after most people had left. They still had the zwanze in the keg for sale with no wait. To be fair, they didn't have any other Cantillon beers on tap at that time, and I think Zwanze Day is more about the experience and drinking all the Cantillon beers on tap with other people.

you shouldnt feel bad for the south, they brought this on themselves by having small populations.

It's a single file line and a crap shoot what's for sale by the time you get to the front. They just keep reloading the shelf after every 2 or 3 people so it's ever changing.
