With the celebrity status of some craft brewers today, and the nature of certain beers to become fetish items, the work of the beer importer is often overlooked. Twelve Percent Imports, founded in Brooklyn by Brian Ewing in the mid-2000s, began as a project to bring to America some of Ewing's favorite discoveries during his travels in Europe.

Emphasizing unusual and delicious beers from mostly unknown Belgian breweries (including Brouwerij 't Gaverhopke, Brouwerij Hof ten Dormaal and Bierbrouwerij Grand-Café Emelisse), Ewing's offerings began making their way into bottle shops and beer bars all over the country. Twelve Percent later began importing and distributing the beers of gypsy brewers Brian Strumke of Stillwater Artisanal Ales, and Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Evil Twin Brewing, who now represent a cornerstone in the craft beer market, and continue to inspire a new generation of brewers today.

Maggie Fuller of Twelve Percent will be in the shop this Tuesday to guide a tasting of five of her company's offerings, and tell the story of the breweries in her portfolio. As usual, Tuesday Night Tastings at Bierkraft are free, fun and open to the public, but be sure to come early as seating is limited. Cheers!
