Food menu is more limited compared to the other locations, though the selection is hands-down the best in town. From the upstairs "American Bar" to the "Belgian Bar" downstairs in the cellar-like basement, there are more taps than you can shake a stick at and even more bottled beers. In fact, I even found an Ommegang Adoration in early July that had been kept cold and still tasted as fresh as ever.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This a true beer lovers bar. Currently providing a small selection, but usually a very high quality selection. Locating soon to a bigger venue where the selection will be larger. Currently food choices are better than typical bar food. If you want a friendly pub atmosphere where a lot of regulars hang out, this is the place.

There are two things about the south location that exceptional... The overall beer choices they include on their everchanging lineup, and the fact they are also a microbrew pub. Their brewer is one of the best in the area, and he is very creative. Their beer is only available at the south location, but worth the trip to try out Norm's creations.

They are moving in the spring of 2013 to larger space where I hope the food will be as good as the beer and they can keep their neighborhood pub atmosphere.

Had a great time at MonkSouth. Had St. Bernardus Christmas in the appropriate glass and then a pint of Founder's Dirty Bastard.

Bar-keep was nice and helpful. Recommended the Dirty Bastard.

A: Great atmosphere. If I was opening up a bar focused on beer, this would be something I would aspire to.

S: Service was great. Man tending the bar came over more than once to check on us. Friendly and knowledgeable.

S: Selection was great for South Asheville. I think 30 taps of all kinds of styles. Divided into American and Foreign brews. Lots of bottles.

F: Can't really comment on the food. Did have the cashews, which had a great spicy and sweet combo.

Never been to the downtown store, but if you're in the South Asheville area, this is worth a try.

As if having the Monk within an hour of my house wasnt good enough, they opened a satellite branch 15 mins closer to me :) I stopped in here on my way home the other day to check it out as I had never been to the new location. It was about what I had expected, though the location is a bit different and not really the way I would go through town. Great selection of at least 25 taps and more bottles then I could count. Good mixture of Belgians, locals and classic american crafts. Prices were decent and the place was laid back and chill. Overall it is not a replacement for the original monk, but it works very well. If I lived in this side of town I would be doing back flips.

I visited the relatively new TM-South on 12/14/2009 after 9:00PM. It was a slow Monday night. The thirty tap selection was good. Ommegang was represented well. I was told the downtown location on Paxton has an even better selection of taps. I had the St. Bernardus Christmas, Pirrate and French Broad Wee Heavy-Er Sctoch Ale all in appropriate glasses. At 9% to 10% ABV these selections were warming and hit the spot. The bar-keep was knowledgeable and helpful. He provided me with some small samples of other selections. The kitchen was closed which was a disappointment. I was told the kitchen closes at 9:00 even though the menu states there are late night options consisting of a cheese board, house marinated olives, baked soft pretzels and nuts. I was allowed to have warm mapley spiced cashew nuts which were fine. According to the previous reviewer there are about 100 bottles available. I did not see that many bottles. It appeared there were about forty-five. The TM-South seems to be priced right from I have experienced in larger cities and is worth visiting.

Located in the upscale Gerber Village shopping plaza MonkSouth brings beer culture to the growing southern suburbs of Asheville.

A nice, if somewhat non-descript, interior with pleasant lines, a lenghty, modern looking bar area and a warm feel. While all of this works it feels a bit dull nonetheless.

We only stopped in for a quick pint of Highland Cold Mountain so our server didn't have long to prove himself. While there he did a fine job though, nothing crazy but certainly solid.

Selection is impressive. With 30 taps, a couple hundred bottles and the occassional cask offering you would be hard pressed not to find something interesting.

No food this trip, but if it is along the same lines as the original don't expect to have a full sized meal here.

All in all a decent place to stop in for a pint or two. A blessing, I am sure, to those that live in the area or points farther south, such as Hendersonville. If you don't feel like driving all the way into downtown Asheville MonkSouth can easily satisfy your craft beer cravings.
