Another trip through the looking glass hand-in-hand with our adventure buddies at Half Acre Beer Co. On & On Part 3 is the quantum result of both paths taken – a standalone pale, sweet component and another dark, roasty component spent time in separate barrels before rejoining and blending into a stout fluent in the language of barleywine -- combining the sweet, complex depths of aged malt without losing the shadowed primal note of roasty warmth.

Review at at Home (Chicago, Illinois) on February 17, 2024. Can Notes: Picked up as part of my Deep Woods Season Ticket. 16 oz canned 1/5/24 at 6:58:00 AM. 16.60% ABV Double Barrel-Aged Stout brewed in collaboration with Half Acre at Revolution Brewery. Refrigerated at the brewery and at home until this morning. Art by Matt Gordon.
Appearance: Poured the first ten oz into a hand held snifter. Medium thin dark brown to black pour with creamy tan lacing settles into bubble around and above the rim and over about 20% of the rest of the base. Carbonation heavy and persistent. It's Alive!!! 4.0
Aroma: Getting pretty strong barrel at the initial opening and again at the 15 minutes mark, getting strong bourbon, somewhat strong harsh vs. smooth backed by an oak flexing its muscles. The strong malt presence yields a generous caramel backing, and I'm getting some additional barleywine notes in terms of dark fruits. Very nice blend here. 4.25
Taste: OK, this is incredibly sweet and malty. First impression is diving mouth open into a huge caramel vat. The tasting characteristics are definitely closer to a barleywine / strong ale than the stout, so perhaps my style classification concerns on BA were incorrect despite the brewery's classification. I'm getting a little more bourbon nearing the half hour mark, but little nuance or frankly enjoyment with caramel sundae topping curb stomping everything its stubby thick legs can reach. I ma bracing myself with each sip, like some concoction at my Busia's house I was not enjoying buy must finish, or else. 2.5
Mouthfeel: Medium body, feels much thick due to the intense sweetness. Strong as hell, tastes like a double of a sweet bourbon cocktail, stronger than the already strong ABV. Faint gentle carbonation, the finish is fresh sundae poured caramel that, wait for it, goes on and on. 3.5
Overall: I absolutely loved On and On Part one, a mix of a porter with the malt base, stout and ryewine. This beer lies on the other end of the spectrum. I don't necessarily think it’s a flawed beer beyond the extreme one note sweetness, which is the opposite of what I seek. Would I recommend to others? If you like really strong sweet beers, yes, give it a go. If you want some balance and complexity, or have a strong aversion to cloying sweetness, you should probably pass or get a small sample pour before cracking open a 16 oz can. Trying to score for what it is vs. by biases and preferences, but disappointed based on the strong releases by Revolution, including multiple collaborations with Half Acre over the years. 3.0

On & On: Part 3 from Revolution Brewing. 16 fl oz can, purchased 03/03/26 from Half Time, received 05/03/26. $ 20.24 (Including tax and shipping)/$ 1.265/fl oz). Stored at 40 degrees F at home. Reviewed 23/03/26, review 3713. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “01/05/24”. Served at 57.3 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 63.6 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lit, same.
Head – Average (Maximum 1.3 cm, aggressive center pour) Tan, high density with average retention, lightening to Biscuit as it oxygenates, slowly dropping to a 0.35 - 0.5 cm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – Poor. A few spotty islands, but at 16.6% ABV, it’s surprising that any lacing exists.
Aroma – 4.5 – Roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon – no alcohol.
Flavor – 4.5 – Basically follows the nose with the addition of a bit of peppery cinnamon, slight alcohol (16.6 % as stamped on the bottom of the can). No dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl. Distinct gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium to Full: Edging into Creamy: Soft but lively carbonation.
Style: Fits the BA description.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 (After adding 0.25 point for credited label art) Cudos to Revolution - TWICE-CREDITED label art, both on the signed label and as a separate credit line! Matt Gordon Dali-esque surreal label. More bourbon than some highly advertised BBA stouts (Looking at you BCBS)! Not particularly easy drinking initially, but, as it warms, definitely worth the initial pain!

Surprisingly pale for the ABV, looking more like a barleywine in the glass. Roasty, meaty, and boozy on the nose and continuing through the palate. Slippery and thick mouth feel. Moderate carb. Not bad but not the most memorable

Canned 01/05/24
a: Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Light brown small head recedes quickly to a line around the glass
s: dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, bourbon
t: follows on from the nose with dark chocolate, oak, vanilla & bourbon
m: medium body, medium-low carbonation
o: This is a no frills top notch Bourbon Barrel Aged stout. A bit of a bruiser, sure, but if this sounds appealing, you should enjoy it. I sure did.

16 ounce can into a snifter. Canned 1/5/24, had 7/12/24. Also had on tap at release.
Pours a fairly opaque dark brown, with a slight head and no real lacing. Aromas of bourbon, oak, malt, fig, raisin, caramel, tobacco as it warms, light char. Flavors of bourbon, malt, oak, raisin, fig, some caramel, light vanilla and brown sugar, light tobacco as it warms. Smooth, a very good full body, appropriately carbonated.
This is best fully warmed. Strong barrels, lots of distinct aromas and flavors, an especially good aroma. Really good.

16o can, date stamped 01/05/24
thanks to Ken for the can!
L: black body, almost no head
S: oaky & boozy bourbon, roast, caramel, toffee, vanilla
T: boozy bourbon, oak barrel, vanilla, roasted barley, dark cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple, anise, earthy hops
F: full bodied, lower carbonation, a very boozy sipper, finishes more sweet than bitter with an alcohol burn on the throat
O: if I’m reading it right, this is a blend of a barrel-aged barleywine and a barrel-agedstout and it’s delicious.

A modest tan head sits atop a slightly less than expected dark brown body. Very pretty aroma: vanilla, maple, caramel & sweet malt. It is sweet. Flavors are all that it promised by its aroma plus bourbon, cinnamon, dark chocolate, prune, berries, charred oak & roasted malt. Thick & velvety smooth. Nor much carbonation but enough alcohol to heat the tongue & burn the stomach. Overall: I love stouts & this is one of the best.

Brownish black stout pour with a light brown head. Rugged bourbon barrel, with molasses, brown sugar, mild dark cherry, decent caramel, and bittersweet chocolate in nose. Taste has sweet caramel molasses and a strong cola note leading, then wood root, bourbon, bittersweet chocolate and the finally toasty oak finish. Not the smoothest and sneaky sweet, warmer on the booze for sure, and thins out through the sip from the massive start
