Humperdinks Brewpub (Northwest Highway)

I missed my flight and had to stay the night in Dallas. Oh darn (sarcastic voice). I stopped at a couple of my favorite drinking stops in the city and ended up the night at this Humperdinks, which happened to by down the street from my hotel and the only place around open past midnight on a Monday night.

Huge space, log-cabin style. Reminds me of that North by Northwest Brewery I visited in Austin, and also Uncle Buck's in Grapevine. Generic stuff.

They have 12 taps of generic stuff (IPA, Porter, Stout, Blonde, Lager). A couple of seasonals included a Maibock and Doublebock.. and three guest taps from Texas breweries (Lakewood, Revolver).

I tried the IPA and Porter and they tasted alright fine. I also got a black-and-tan of those two beers (by mistake) and it was tasty.

Service was OK, atmosphere is whatever, beer is generic. But you know, on a Monday at 1 am on that goddamned stretch of Hwy 12, there is nothing better around.

I've been to Humperdinck's a few times. I was there today for lunch again. They have decent American food, various hamburgers, meatloaf, Quesedillas, salads and stuff, and some interesting beers including a couple of decent IPA's and a good Hefeweizen. It's big, log cabin style, and the servers are friendly. It may not be a top notch craft brew pub, but it has a nice ambiance and it is good enough for a good time with good enough beer.

Spacious, big bar, lots of TVs, a great place to watch "the game". Lots of beers on tap, but definitely not what I consider top quality beers and those house brewed are not up to local standards.

Extensive menu with good choices. Go to watch the game but not for the tap beer.

 

 

Now that I have a job near the airport, I end up coming to eat here on the way home a couple times a month. In the 90s, Humperdinks was a good choice, when there were no full breweries in town, only a couple brewpubs, and the places to get good beer were few and far between. These days, it's appeals are kinda limited: are you already in the area? Is it happy hour and you can drink OK beer for really, really low prices? Do you not mind eating completely generic American food?

Their beer line-up hasn't changed in 20 years. There's an occasional special, but it's rarely worth trying. There's an IPA (Big Red--probably their best beer, and my go-to one), a hefeweizen (actually pretty good--on the fruity-estery range of hefes), a generic light beer, a fruited blonde that's borderline disgusting, generic porters and ambers. At the NW Highway in particular, always ask for a non-frosted glass. Every time. Or they'll forget. The beers come in 3 sizes: American pint, 24 oz, and 36 oz. The last is in a chalice and is hard to hold. The 24 is the best size, for value and holding.

There's a bar area and a restaurant area. The bar area has headache inducing music. Avoid it unless that's your thing. The food line-up is generic American: burgers, sandwiches, fish, pasta, steaks. Most of them are oversized, portion and calorie-wise. If there's a single interesting item on the menu, I haven't found it yet.

Basically, happy hour: cheap, moderately-decent beer.

 

 

Humperdinks is a must stop place anytime I'm in DFW area. The beers are always great. I never leave without at least one growler. Great atmosphere and good people to share it with!

The food is always good and the service is terrific. if you're lucky, you can get a tour of the brewery.

 

Humperdinks has been on a painfully slow decline over the past ten years. Some of the beers used to be really good but it seems like each year they get more bland. Servers usually don't know much or anything about the beers and it's not unusual to have the beers served undercarbonated. Haven't been in a couple years, probably won't ever feel like I need to go back. It's too bad. Food's fine, atmosphere is fine. Has a sports bar atmosphere. Used to be a little more upscale mixed in with the sports bar vibe. Used to be a lot more busy but I guess as quality goes down more clientele stops returning. Just not good beer and your beer selections are their own beers or the usual BMC beers.

I'm always at Humperdink's for the UFC fights, I've tried all of their beers, besides their Juan Moore Light and maybe a few seasonals that I haven't seen yet. The service is always ok, only a few times I've been left with an empty cup looking for a waitress. Most of their beers are pretty good but the food is pretty average.
They have delicious Hump Chips, which are their home-made potato chips that they didn't even charge me for last time I was their. Here's a rundown of the beers I've tried.
Texas Blonde- My girl's favorite, it's tastes like hay/ grass, almost a pilsner taste. about 4.9% abv
Buttface Amber Ale- Sweet caramel and will leave you "buttfaced" with a 6.somethin% abv.
Big Red IPA- Nice solid IPA my favorite beer here. It is fresh, hoppy but not too bitter. But I'm a hophead so more IBU's would be welcomed. about 6% abv
Mayday Maibock- Typical Bock beer, a little on the sweet side.
Big Horn Hefeweizen- I guess it was ok for a hefeweizen but it was kind of warm.
Total Disorder Porter- Chocolatey and tasty but not too heavy.
Chocolator- Big Chocolatey beer with a high abv, but light mouthfeel.

Suggestion- Try a black and tan with the McMurray's Irish Stout and the Big Red IPA, it's awesome, you can try the stout with the buttface amber also but it's a little too sweet for me.

Pacific Northwest themed brewpub located at the intersection of NW Highway and Walton Walker. They usually have eight or nine beers on tap, ranging from not very good at all to average to slightly above average. The styles range from Light, Lime flavored lagers to bocks, nut brown ales and smoked beers. They have samplers and inexpensive growlers of all of the beers, which is nice. The food is nothing special, but is basic chain restaurant food: Burgers, chicken tenders, wings, etc... Not a great brewpub, but not a bad place to watch a game and meet up with your friends.

Have tried beers at a number of these restaurants and always am happy with the beer but the food leaves something to be desired. Humperdinks has been in Dallas for years and they provide a diverse food menu with house brewed beers. Many of their beers will grow on the patron and have an initial bite that could be from the municipal water supply. The locations that are active breweries also serve Growlers and kegs for carry out, both with very reasonable prices. Growlers are $13 with refills for $5, both of which can be reduced by joining their mug club. Over all this is a good place to have a beer and catch a game but sometimes the service leaves something to be desired.

Humperdinks is the same as CB& Potts in Colorado. Both sport Big Horn Breweries.

The beer here (Dallas) is no where near as good at those in Colorado. That being said, in CO the guests all seem to have house beers, here they all have Miller or Bud Light. The quality might be the clientèle not the brewer. Example in Highlands Ranch the seasonal is a Dopplebock, here it is a Light Lime Beer.

I am visiting on a Post Cowboys Game Sunday. The bar is packed. the staff is lively and frendily. they are serving all beers, even house beers, in plastic cups. Yeachhh!

Had Fish Tacos, and yes they fry everything here in Big-D. they were OK, but the presentation was excellent and they appeared minutes after i ordered. Great Job!

Table next to me had Nachos, I chose wrong. I will have to get those on my next visit.

No Smoking a plus. Great Sports Bar, like the rest of the chain. Feel free to be casual.

I have been to Humperdinks/Big Horn Brewing twice. The first time was over two years ago and I was supprised based on the rating I saw. The place was pretty full and many younger people drinking the local beer. I remember the food being good. This last trip Humperdinks had five year-round brews and 4 seasonal. Some of the styles were not my cup of tea, but were quality beers. I ordered the Chicken Fried Checked and I have to say it was pretty good and I am from Alabama where I have had some good Chicken Fried Checken. The Toast was great. The outside of the toast was crispy by the middle was soft and full of butter. The crowd was not too large but it was a Tuesday night. The waitress was very nice and freindly but did not know anything about the beers ans actually said that she had not tried any of the beers.

Visited this place after dinner with my wife and her dad. I ordered the IPA (not bad, way better than anything I would have had at the restaurant we went to) she had the amber and my father in law was able to enjoy the blonde. The serving size was generous and the atmosphere was ok, it wasn't too loud or anything. (I guess you can thank the high ceiling for that). I've had the food a couple of times at the Arlington location, its always been good, but didn't have anything this time. The place is kind of corporate, but I wish more chain restaurants were like this and less like Chili's or Bennigans.

This place seems cavernous due to the very high ceilings, but has that sanitized for your protection corporate sportsbar feel to it complete with macro brewiana and Marylin Monroe posters. Brewhouse is on the right as you walk in and directly in front is the oddly shaped bar with comfortable stools. Four pool tables take up alot of space on one side of the room and booths and tables makes up the rest of the space. Seems like they get alot of Coors light, corona, and Miller light drinkers since the bartender asked if I wanted a Coors light as soon as I sat down. But the saving grace is that they charge a couple of dollars more for these beers than the house beers - smart. After looking at the taps and ordering a IPA (which was really just a pale ale - simcoe and amarillo hops?, where? did you wave them over the kettle?) the bartender had to make sure it wasn't going to be too bitter for me. Ha! I'm not from around these parts, I can handle it. As a pale ale, it was decent. Also had a decent porter while watching the Yankees come from behind and beat the Rangers on the big screen tv behind the bar. Holy crap, 24 ozs of beer for $4 - just had to ask for a non-frosted mug and the bartender didn't remember about my preference on my second one.

Ok beer to quench your thirst, but not something I could drink all night, but it was more than I was expecting. Didn't eat any food since I just devoured a mediocre steak at TL&C accross the parking lot. Big Daddy's liquor store nearby also sucked. Looks like there's a honky tonk in the same complex if that's your thing.

Can't wait to get back to New England and my homebrew.

I must have been there on an off day. Coming home from a Texas Rangers game on July 4th that had a rare 2 hour rain delay so I decided I needed a few brews to get back in it. Only about 20 people in the bar and only a few people eating so service was stellar.

Tried the Zommerfest first which is a Steam Beer. Not bad, malty with a crisp finish. Maybe needs more hops, not as balanced as it should. Next was the Hefe. Very nice. Fruity with coriander, slightly grainy from the yeast and clean finish. No fruit. Might have been too cold but it really hit the spot. Was enjoying looking at the "Tallest Bar in Dallas" when the power went out. Too bad, I was enjoying the $2 pints (the Tuesday Happy Hour price). Next time I'll go back when it might be hopping more.

Plenty of tables and bar space with some pool tabels and dart boards in the back. They have about 6-8 of their micros on tap with 5 standards with 3-4 special seasonals. They only have Bud light and Miller lite for those who haven't had their eyes opened to craft beers yet.
