Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri

So the wife already left to the hotel, exhausted after a full day of flying overseas and sightseeing in Oslo, but I keep going. After Tilt and CrowBar, it is Schouskjeller time (damn the spelling). The place is in the hip Grunnerloka neighborhood, in a courtyard shared with other restaurants and businesses. It’s kind of tricky to find at first- the sign is small and the brewery is downstairs in a basement.

But what a neat joint- a brick vault, like a wine cellar or a medieval chamber. It smells like a brewery as you go down those stairs. Cozy, intimate, particularly in the autumn/winter cold weather, with a fireplace and all. It was very busy on a Friday night when I first visited and almost completely empty on a Sunday afternoon when I visited again with the wife. Both times, I had great service from the bartender, a British lad.

16 taps in all, many from the house brewery and a good bunch of guests as well. Nightmare before Christmas, Pumpkin, All Black Stout, Put-In Your Glass, Juleol Vintage 13, Empress of India IPA, Joca Pale Ale… these guys make a lot of different beers, that’s for sure. Among the guests they had two Cigar City handles and even a Two Roads from CT (Ol’ Factory). Also a good bottle list, including Jack Abbey, Older Viscosity, 6 Lost Abbey, BA Numbskull (399 NOK), Deliverance (235 NOK) and more.

Price-wise, I am sad they don’t do half pints, but at 67-72 for full pours it wasn’t too bad (89 for the house Imp Stout). Bartender bought me a half pour of Put-In Your Glass that had been poured for somebody else. No food but chips, yet there are many restaurants out in the ‘hood.

I loved this place. Probably my favorite beer joint in Oslo.

 

 

Fun brewery to check out in Oslo. I had the Pilsner and NE IPA and enjoyed them both. Located in a church like basement so the vibe is pretty cool. Bartender was nice and helpful.
