Our Ur-Gose is a revival of the old Märzen-gose style, but with new twists: to the traditional barley, wheat and oat malts and coriander we add Swiss Stone Pine cones, fine Ceylon Cinnamon, and smoked salt from the thousand-year-old Halle saltworks near the brewery. Finally, extra doses of aromatic Hallertauer Perle and bittering Taurus hops round out this unique Märzen-gose.

Ritterguts Gose "Urgose Märzen"
,5 L brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$5.75 @ State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a very hazy deep amber colored body beneath an average-sized head of dense white foam. Plenty of bubbles can be seen rising within. The aroma is fruity with a suggestion of acidity over a lightly caramelish malt base. The flavor reveals the acidity and it's fairly tart but far from puckeringly sour. The malt comes through clearly as what you'd expect from a Märzen, although it's a bit thin. As for the salt there's a whole lot less than most American versions of a gose, yet it remains clear. The acidity that it has is very clean, and refreshing. It doesn't have any of the mineral character that you often find. It's not at all bitter but neither does it need to be. The sourness, malt, and then saltiness that you find in the finish all work together and keep it interesting throughout the glass. I'm really liking this. In the mouth it's light-medium in body and effervescent. That carbonation, along with the acidity and salt dry it out. In the end I have to say that this is definitely one of the best gose beers I've ever tasted, and I guess that's somewhat to be expected coming from Ritterguts in Liepzig.

Review: 0,5l bottle of Ritterguts Urgose Märzen, a Märzen Gose style: 5.5% ABV

Head is flat, none to speak of, but the colour looks great, a nice clear orange coloured beer, which looks tops.

The smell is interesting, get the salty aroma no problem, but also get the pine cone easily enough, amongst the usual range of odors........citrus, malts, coriander.

Like the smell, has an earthly feel to it.

As to be expected, in the taste I also get the salty flavours, and the spices, the malts and coriander. Very well balanced all things considering!

It is a high energy drink, I feel lifted and relaxed when drinking it. Actually felt it was a bit similar to a cold lucozade! Not bad I guess, can slowly sip it, the bitterness is light, and easy to manage.

It basically is a regular Märzen with the unique Gose style added. And that in itself is something to try. I liked it, it takes a while to warm your cockles, to overcome the initial surprise of all the sweet tastes, but then afterwards you can drink it slowly and relax into the Gose style.

Will definitely buy again, loving this new Gose style of beer on my taste buds!

Moderate pour yields a 6/4 inch white head over a bright amber body with little lacing. Nose of a proper Gose, but the flavors are different from all previous examples of the style due to its unique ingredients:

"Our Ur-Gose is a revival of the old Märzen-Gose style, but with new twists: to the traditional barley, wheat and oat malts and coriander we add Swiss Stone Pine cones, fine Ceylon Cinnamon, and smoked salt from the thousand-year-old Halle saltworks near the brewery. As the beer warms the cinnamon comes out fully on the nose with some of the pine cone as well on the nose, taste, and finish. Wow! Mouthfeel is topnotch and overall, a real special Gose right here folks. Cheers!
