Here's the skinny: My wife and I will be in San Diego at a large convention in May. After I'm done with the work part of my trip, we'll have a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to knock out some beer destinations. I really want to hit some breweries as well as great beer bars. I can figure out the beer bar musts like Blind Lady and Toronado, but need help planning brewery tours and the best way to do them. I'd really like to hit Alpine, The Bruery, and Lost Abbey at the very least. Since we won't have a car and wouldn't want to drive anway- would one of those brewery tours online be a good move? I didn't see any that go to Alpine or Bruery....has anyone had any experience with these services? Otherwise we're probably looking at cabbing it everywhere and not sure how well that would work out? Any other local advise on good spots or breweries is appreciated as well. We'll be staying downtown in the convention area ....TIA!

Since the Bruery is in Orange County, about 2.5 hours away from SD, you're best bet is to rent a car.

I wonder what a cab ride from downtown San Diego to the Bruery would cost. I'm guessing that getting to Alpine could be done for 50 bucks or so one way.

Without a car you're hosed. For the same price as a beer bus for 2 you could probably rent a car and hit the joints you want to go for vs. what they have listed. Easy cab ride to 30th st and walk it from there.

That map does not have Wet 'N Reckless; therefore it is useless, or at best of limited utility.

If you are completely against the car idea... hop on amtrak and take the train north. You can take it fairly close to the Bruery, from there you may need to take a cab, but it is a hell of a lot more relaxing and less expensive. plus you can pop open one of those bottles you just bought while cruising back down to SD at the end of the day. The train will take you down through San Juan, oceanside, del mar... all the good stuff. Stop off in carlsbad or something for a bite to eat and some more beer. The train is actually a pretty under utlized option in So Cal. Shit, just stop at the Del Mar race track and watch some ponies while you're at it.

Renting a car is really going to be a must to fully take advantage of all the beer greatness that surrounds San Diego. Alpine makes some damn fine beers and its a treat to go there and buy it as fresh as possible. Unless they have expanded, they don't do tours. I called and asked if they did tours before driving there whilst on vacation and the woman laughed, replying "you can pretty much see everything from the counter"

As God as my witness, it was not there when I first looked at it!

    I quit.

Amtrak will, in fact, take you from Santa Fe depot in the middle of downtown San Diego up to angels stadium in Anaheim. From there, you can take a roughly $20 cab ride to The Bruery. Expect a little less than two hours of transportation time on the train.

Also expect to shell out over a hundred bucks in transportation costs to/from.

I would estimate around 80 bucks, but its splitting hairs at that point. All in all, less worry and a relaxing adventure if you ask me. call a cab to meet you while you are on the train heading north. no delay once you get there.

The rental car idea is hands down the best idea though.

p.s. I just realized the Fullerton train station is maybe a $10 cab ride to Placentia and the Bruery tasting room. and the train will also stop in Orange as well, if you want to hit up old orange brewery or anything like that. not the most efficient process, but a process!

Amtrak is a great way to do The Bruery. A little over a hundred bucks for two people round trip. Just did the trip for the Initiation Celebration. Great way to spend a day in So Cal and you get to see a ton of the beaches and beach communities. I love it. Highly recommend as that will actually make it more like a vacation and less like you are driving all over the damn place trying to hit up breweries on a tight schedule. You can pick an early leave time, get dropped off at the Fullerton station walking distance to the brewery and then head home again. If you choose this option you need to mix and match the leaving destination to get all times. Meaning, you might want to head back from Angels Stadium rather than Fullerton to get back to SD earlier in the day.

Too bad they can't use that freight siding (mainly used by Kimberly-Clark) to run a special Bruery tram to within a block of the place - that would be cool.
