Was visiting my in-laws in the ultra-suburban Springfield, VA, and stopped into the Total Wine there over Thanksgiving - was very impressed. Not only was their selection vast and well-priced, but they had a fairly decent stock of rarer stuff behind the counter and weren't afraid to sell to people they didn't know.

Regarding Utopias, I had no idea it was hard to find for folks - I see bottles of it sitting on shelves in several NYC-area bottle shops. I don't know that many people who have $250 to drop on a bottle of beer, though.

I work with total wines, have serviced about half of the va stores and there are some managers/beer buyers that are real cool and knowledgable. But... Just as many who are clueless assholes.

I never worried about somebody being knowledgeable at a beer store.
I know just about everything about every beer on their shelves, in fact if I run into a guy who does know more than me, he'd have to be some sort of kook.

I go to TW because of the prices, fast turnover = fresh bottles, and because they seem to get just about everything a boutique shop can.

    True that.

If I hear one more grapefruit yang from them I may go post office just plum crazy.

Nothing against those fine folks that avoid my dogs to bring me mail.

It's funny because as soon as I saw the thread title, I knew there had to be a Dumb and Dumber reference on the horizon.

    +1 internets to you sir.

Walked into the Charleston, SC Total Wine the other day and discovered Founder's Red's Rye @ $5.99/sixer! WooHoo! Went back today hoping they'd still have some left and couldn't believe they hadn't been cleaned out. Got another sixer for good measure. Yum!

I live in downtown Boston and don't have a car, so going there isn't really feasible

There's a TW right down the street from me, and that's probably the main place I go to for beer. Their selection is awesome, and I'm on good terms with the staff, and sometimes they'll pull me aside if they have anything interesting behind the counte (that's how Igot my hands on a bottle of Sucaba last week ). Overall I love the place, and to any BAs in the Phoenix area: the last time I checked (yesterday) they still had plenty of BA Bigfoot left at the arrowhead location.

I don't like the warm shelves where 90% of the beers sit, and in my experience anything you have not heard of is contract-brewed swill or an import that should have stayed home in Iceland or Austria. The store in Tucson, vast and brand new, was stocked with old stuff and several bacterial bottles and canss, especially the Arizona beers. Maybe for a deal on big-selling major brew, but not to look for anything interesting.

I'm a big fan of Total Wine in Henderson, NV but I went to one in Orlando 2 weeks ago and it was pretty poor. Guess they are all very different. The only thing I found in Orlando was a cool CCB snifter.

Came here to say just this. JAX TW has been consistently solid on selection and service.

The only time I find something rare at the TW here is when CCB distributes a small release. And those always disappear within the day.

I like that they keep the beer cozy at room temperature in Spokane. Makes it hyper-age.

Why would anyone ask a liquor store employee questions? I just go in and grab what I want. The only time I talk to the guys there is to mess with them and the girls to flirt with 'em.
