Stone IRS is one of my favorite beers and one that got me into craft beer when I started college. I picked up a case of 2011 and found about 6 bottles of 2010 at my local store around the same time. The 2011 bottles I've had were delicious, but the 2010 were out of this world. What's the oldest vintage of Stone IRS anyone has had? The bottle says age for 5 years, but has anyone gone significantly past that? Just wondering how long to hold onto the rest of my bottles, and how much of the 2012 I should acquire. Thanks

I had a 2002 at Stone Winter Storm that was delicious. Other than that the oldest I've had was 2008 which was also great

Really, When did you have it? I had it on the Last day(Sat) and it tasted infected. The sourness increased as it warmed up.

Anyway, I've had bottles back to 05 with 07 being my favorite. I will be doing a 10 year vertical in June for my birthday so i will know exactly how they all are aging. Also, i was at the 10 year anniversary last year and tried from 02-10 on tap and my favorite was 02 then 04. I would say that the 2011 vintage was very good fresh. I think it will age very nicely.

2005 growler fill directly from Stone's cellar. It was one of the best beers I have ever had.

I can't remember the oldest I've had, but I think 3 years is the sweet spot.

I had a 2008 at Brick Store Pub a few days ago which was fantastic. It was the first Stone RIS I've had, though, so I can't compare it to other years.

The title of this thread made me lol, especially since I'm reading this thread while in Federal Income Tax class....

in the bottle I find the sweet spot to be close to 4 years. 3-5 is phenomenal. Enjoyed a '02 a couple weeks ago but kinda wished I'd found an occasion to open it a couple years ago.

    cheers--

i recently had an '08 and it was great. for my personal tastes it was not any better than say an '10; just different. with age the sharp roast/chocolate character will fade and the malt backbone and darker fruit notes come more forward. oddly, some of the notes in the malt reminded me slightly of expedition and i had never even thought of stone irs and expedition being remotely similar.

my personal preference is about one and one-half years. just enough to smooth it a bit but fresh enough so that the roast and bite are intact.

I bought a number of bombers of Stone IRS in 2009. I didn’t really like it fresh in 2009; there was a ‘different’ taste to the beer (a herbaceous taste) that I personally didn’t enjoy. I tasted a bottle in 2010 and I still was not thrilled with the taste of the beer. Last year (2011) I tried again and it was definitely tasting ‘better’. This year (2012) the beer was absolutely OUTSTANDING. I have one more bomber left which I will try next year.

So far, three years is the charm for me.

    Cheers!

I guess I wasn't clear in my post. I have annually been drinking the IRS beers that I purchased in 2009. So, I was relating that I recently (2012) drank one of my 2009 vintage beers. The 2009 beer that I recently consumed was OUTSTANDING.

    Cheers!

Ahh, gotcha. That makes sense. I'm probably the only one that missed that now that I read it again.
