Road trip from Des Moines to Minnesota - help needed

    Was thinking about heading up to Minnesota in the coming days/weeks to get some beer I can't buy in Iowa. Sounded like a fun road trip. Couple questions:

    1. From Des Moines, sounds like closest place with a lot of selection would be Austin, MN. What liquor stores do you recommend?

    2. Is it true there are no beer sales on Sunday?

    3. What is the likelihood of finding the following beers?
    • Surly - Abrasive, Darkness, Furious, Pentagram
    • Laguitas - Sucks
    • Great Lakes - Blackout Stout, Edmund Fitz
    • Mnpls Town Hall - Czar Jack Imperial Stout
    • Central Waters - Fifteen

    Head up to the Twin Cities...bop around and talk to beer centric people in beer centric locations. You will find some of the beer you are looking for, others you aren't and walk away happy.

    1. Not sure about stores in Austin. Might very well be worth a trip further up to Blue Max in Burnsville. I would guess a much better selection than in Austin. Indeed would be one brewery to look for and Blue Max has them and Austin for sure does not. It is right off of 35 and looks like it would be about a 3 hour drive for you, but would be worth it in my opinion.

    2.No sales on Sunday in MN

    3. Abrasive and Furious- yes(at Blue Max, not sure about Austin) Darkness- no, Pentagram- maybe in the cities. Sucks and Ed Fitz are at Blue Max right now. Fifteen was not sent to MN, Can only get Town Hall Brews at Town Hall and Czar Jack growlers were all presold. Good luck!

    Thanks for the responses so far guys. Any other recommendations that I should grab, I like a lot of imperial stouts and Barrel Aged stuff?

    Fulton Worthy Adversary and War & Peace are local RIS that are now available and Tyranena Devil Made Me Do It or Benji's Imperial Porter, Lagunitas Imperial Stout and Cappuccino Stout are good choices that I don't believe are available in Iowa.

    Yes, go to the cities, hit a few bars and liquor stores.

    Also, depending on what day of the week, stop in Mason City and Northwood for growler fills. Remember in Minnesota you need the growler of the establishment that us filling it

    You may have already been there but Worth Brewing just south of the MN/IA border in Northwood is always a nice stop. On-site growlers only with some great monthly one-offs. Limited hrs though.
