Central NY also implies central in the east-west direction. Syracuse and Utica are Central New York, but I've never heard Albany referred to as such.

To me, Upstate always meant the upper half of the state until I went away to college and all my friends from NYC referred to anything north of the Bronx as Upstate.

I've always called Albany 'upstate' and all that shit out west of there 'outstate' (as in 'up and out').

South of Finger Lakes is Southern Tier, Finger Lakes is Finger Lakes, and west of that has been either Western New York State, or Snowbelt. Albany has always been central New York, my area South Central New York, and upstate has always meant Glens Falls north to Masena and Potsdam. I could be old school, and behind the times though. Usually the younger folks rely on us for shit like this, maybe not now:slight_smile:

Well, the quote was "upstate first, followed by the city" so hopefully (for me:wink:) 'upstate' means 'not NYC' in this particular context.

FWIW- I'm a NYC/LI native, so to us there was 'upstate' and 'way upstate', with no real definitive boundary between the two, though Albany was involved. (sounds similar to slander's view as well...).

    Larry Bell disagrees:

Bell’s Founder, Larry Bell, re-iterated and added, “No set timetable- it will be our next state when we have enough beer to go around. Then, upstate first followed by the City.”

If Albany is central NY, than Upstate must start around Glens Falls, no?

    Precisely!

This sounds like something we will not see anytime soon. Sort of like year round Lagunitas Sucks, just another urban myth.

Haha the only thing I knwo for sure is Mid Hud Val won't be getting this first, we got one thing first so far and it was by total accident in all the years I have lived here. The rest of the state one way or another always gets everything else first:slight_smile:

I believe Bell's was concerned at the time that their beers would be overpriced in the NY market place and that consumers would be hesitant to pick up a $15 six-pack which might cost $9-10 in other states. Some of the NY wholesale distributors apply as much as a 40% premium to a hot item before it reaches the stores, who in turn, usually add their 25-30% for retail sale.

Every state has different rules concerning distribution for beer. For instance, in North Carolina, some brewers ship directly to stores and distributors have to compete with services and other brands. In New York, while self-distribution is possible and usually done by micro-brewers, like Port Jeff Brewing and Blind Bat Brewing, most of the out of state brewers use wholesale companies, such as Union Beer and Manhattan or S.K.I., to reach markets.

With Bell's possibly arriving in NY in the near future, the brewer may have reached a better deal for its products with a distributor so that the consumers aren't seeing high prices for Bell's beers.

I have 3 bottles of Hopslam and 1 bottle of Kalamazoo Stout left from winning a recent BIF.

I can drink 1 bottle a week until Bell's arrives.

There's a case of Two Hearted Ale out there with my name on it!
