I have noticed print ads here in London while on vacation for Fosters. The ad describes the beer being produced on some insanely hot summer in Australia in like 1880. I am not a home brewer, but don't lagers require fermentation at cooler temperatures? Would this have been possible in a hot climate in the late nineteenth century?

I didn't realize this many people actually payed attention to the content in advertisements, let alone to this level of detail

In climates where there's no ready availability of ice (and before artificial refridgeration) bottom fermented lagers have been produced that are fermented at warmer temperatures, see Steam beer in california for example. Victoria bitter (which today is a lager but might have been an ale earlier, not sure) describes its production process thus:
Foster's might have been fermented at similar temperatures back in the day. One wonders what became of the actual lagering period though if they didn't have access to cold fermentation, maybe it went out the door rather quickly like an ale.

Odd that you went on a vacation for Fosters and then were faced with such troubling Fosters adverts. Also, if you were vacationing for Fosters why wouldn't you just go to Canada were it is made?

My favorite was a Bass Ale ad from several years ago where they mention Horatio Nelson defeating the Spanish Armada- and I don't think they were joking.

Weren't the original steam beers supposed to be a bit crappy? Also the Bay Area never gets hot the way Australia does. Or at least as suggested by this ad. Especially San Francisco.

Are there no caves in Australia?

don't know of the original Steam Beers, of which there were many.
the surviving producer Anchor was known to be a shitty brewery prior to Maytags takeover and transformation.

    the answer to your question...
there was refrigeration and ice making by the mid to late 1800s. they could also build cellars that could reasonably maintain a cool if not cold temperature without any mechanical help. so sure, by 1880, with early refrigeration techniques, lager beer could be reasonably brewed in Australia.

also, advertising is always 100% truthful.
    Cheers.

I have a friend who travels to Australia once or twice a year for work. Fosters is considered a shit beer over there. It is the BMC of the Aussies.

I don't know - possible that the beer known as "Fosters" has changed several times since 1880 too.

Don't take this the wrong way but if you were on vacation why were you reading print ads. Bored?
My advice - stop reading print ads and just look at the pictures. And go sightseeing or drinking while on vacation.

I think the Fosters we get here in Texas is brewed right here at Miller in Ft. Worth if the info on the big cans is correct. It shows the brewer as Oil Can Brewery, Ft. Worth, TX.

I thought I read that steam beers in general were supposedly dreadful.

Thanks for the straight answer. Unfortunately, I can't, with certainty, call "bullshit" on that ad.

Well that was a bit presumptuous. I was reading a free daily newspaper on the tube while traveling from one place to another. I did plenty of sightseeing and drinking (even did a day trip to Brussels to visit some brewery called Canteyon or something), I assure you.

Are there any craft breweries that use the Foster's size can?
