well, that's not really a fruit syrup... it's just a common syrup of some sort... but no doubt, there's a ton of junk food over there! Every time I go over there I get a bit scared of some of the odd "foods". One thing's for certain, we have no monopoly on arificial foods.

That being said, those 100% natrual syrups are abundant and also outrageously delicious. The marco polo syrup could make cardboard palatable.

Then why can I buy it from my local home brew shop, online, herbal shops, etc...?

In Germany, Berliner Weisse is considered a kid's drink. Try and order it "straight up" and they will definitely look at you funny. In stores, that Kindl brand is very cheap. Roughly 50 cents for a bottle. It's thought of like Bud. I like sour beers, but have never understood the craze in the US with Berliner Weisse.

I read a blog last year about a Belgian/German beer tour. The guy said his wife ordered a BW and when he told the waiter he would have one too the waiter stared at him like he was crazy. When the waiter came back to serve them, the guy asked about it and the waiter said BW was considered a woman's drink. LOL. It appears BW may be the Tab of the beer world.

I have a Euro grocery store that sells about 15 different kinds of delicious fruit syrups, but no woodruff syrup. I have used several of them with my home brewed Berliner. It sort of makes me feel like a girly man, but at least it tastes good and adds some variety to the batch.

Why can you buy the Göbber Waldmeister Sirup? I suppose, if the reports of woodruff being banned because it contains coumarin are true, it's because that product is artificially flavored: "Glucose-fructose syrup, water, sugar, citric acid, aroma, E104, E131 and E124."

    No, I'm talking actual woodruff:

Not syrup. (Though I know I've seen non-artificial syrup around in the past as well because I had a bottle at one time.)

Yeah, beats me the particulars of the ban (or supposed ban) - that's why I originally used the CYA terminology of "Many sources note...". I suppose in that case it is just sold as an herb, and is not being used as an ingredient in a manufactured product. The prohibition is usually given as the reason why the German syrups found in the US are artificially flavored (and that unnatural green color, as well).

Here's an FDA sheet FOOD ADDITIVES PERMITTED FOR DIRECT ADDITION TO FOOD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION in which it is stated that woodruff is allowed only for use in alcoholic beverages, which would exclude the syrup but not it's traditional use in May Wine.

I've had it with raspberry syrup once. Woodfour Brewing in Sebastopol, CA served it like that at Lagunitas Beer Circus a few years ago and I was surprised cause I hadn't heard of adding syrup to a Berliner Weisse before- it was rather tasty!

Oooo that sounds good. I've never been to BR, but I've had Tartare on draft multiple times. Might need to make a trip up to the brewery to try it with a syrup!

if a brewery offers it, im down but its not my preference. i greatly prefer drinking the base beer by itself but ill try the syrup add on if its suggested. iron hill throughout PA offers several different syrups which are nothing more than store bought torani syrup (or its cheaper no name brand counterpart) added at serving time. Troegs also recently did this with a gose in their scratch beer lineup. It was advertised as a strawberry rhubarb gose but what poured out of the taps was just a normal gose until they perfomed barside beerology to it prior to serving...that kinda pissed me off

i homebrew lots of berliner and also grow woodruff in my yard. ive made woodruff syrup many times to offer people a sort of historical perspective but honestly the woodruff plant is best utilized outside of syrup. its dainty character is almost completely lost in the syrup. in fact, to get it to the concentration where it is noticeable it is actually toxic...

The only time I have had this they were the mass produced bottled versions with the "flavoring" already added to them before hand in the bottle... Berliner Kindl...

I made a watermelon simple syrup at home and put a bit in with Evil Twin Nomader Weiss. Just throw some sugar and watermelon in a saucepan with some water and let it simmer for a bit. Turned out great.

I'm surprised breweries don't take a more artisanal approach to syrups. give it a 'randall' kind of feel- "today we have our berliner weisse with prickly pear syrup!"

At a local brewery near me called Round Guys, they serve their Berliner plain or with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup. I prefer it plain but my wife loves the raspberry.

Rivertown does a Berliner year round and they always have raspberry and woodruff syrups available. Personally, I love a splash of the woodruff in their Berliner.

I have had the syrups on the side a couple of times.

The first was for Bear Republic Tartare. For a 1.50 more you could get a side of Raspberry and Woodruff.

The second was for Lost Nation's Gose. There was a syrup flight you could do with the beer. I think it was 6 for 6 flavors, or something like that.

I liked the beers on their own without the syrups more to be honest.
