From Ohio aye? I would recommend trying Rivertown's sours (sans Pestilence). Their Lambic is awesome, Gueuze is okay and Ojos Negros is as good as the best of them.

From the original question, I gather you mean NON-lambic sours, yes? Of the Belgians, the Flemish reds and old browns are the epitome, but not the most exported. Petrus is a good one and more likely than most to get onto a boat for the states. Rodenbach Grand Cru perhaps more so. Bourgogne des Flandres is an alternative that might be easier to find but is perhaps a bit less classic than the others. I'm just thinking that those are grocery-store level of distribution in Belgium so might be more readily exported. On the other hand, some of the small makers that export more than they seem to sell here, like Alvinne. I'm partial to the Icthegem family but hard to find as close as Brussels.

Really? Did they leave for a while? In the Boston area it only was coming around as super limited releases until about a year ago.

Try Rodenbach, Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge and the Petrus Aged Pale.

It has been around, but it seems to be in abundance lately.

Purchased at table and vine in West Springfield and the nice beer store in Amherst. Haven't lived there since last summer, though.

That's what I was thinking. I had heard rumors without actually seeing any for a while. And definitely not the variety that's around today.

Oh, ok. Like I say, I heard more than I saw. Is it a Shelton Brothers thing? Did they bring more to the area closer to them in Belchertown?

I'll agree, the Petrus Aged Pale is great.
I haven't had everything they make but I feel like Jolly Pumpkin can do no wrong. La Roja is a standout for sure.
As for Rivertown, I've had two beers from them: Pestilence, their sour brown ale, that was pretty much undrinkable and their Gueuze, that was so watery and boring I can't believe it even has an 84 on here.
Also, Jacobins! Definitely get some of that. Great brew.

I'm not a sour fan, but people seem to enjoy GI Lolita, Juliet, and Madame Rose, and in Ohio they are readily available.

I've never heard of any of those maximumu13 but I will be on the look out.

I unfortunately do not have access to any RR

I couldn't get over how much I liked the smell of the duchesse alone and then the taste Devine

it sounds like the clear winner is petrus aged.

I read that the petrus oud is more like a saison that is not one of my favorite styles I just had a hennepin and drain poured it reminds me too much of miller high life in smell/taste

Depending on where you're at in Ohio, The Bruery Sour In The Rye should be available. I'm drinking a bottle right now and I think you'd probably like it.

Sure there is! It's one of the four styles of beer, along with bitters, sweets, & salties. And in Japan I've heard there's another style that basically tastes like soy sauce.

I like that the OP's question was "Which of these should I avoid?" & so many people read it as "Name as many sour ales as you can".
