Can someone please fill me in on the difference (if there is any)? It looks like there were some threads discussing this top prior to the new boards, but alas, those are not accessible. Any insight is appreciated. Cheers!
I had them both (including the reserve) at a tasting. The way is was described to me was that both beers are brewed in essentially the same way, but the the spice additions are different. The brewers don't consider Pannepuet to be a lesser beer, but the significant majority of tasters - myself included- consider Pannepot the superior taste.
I'm a big Struise fan and have had both beers. Pannepot is definitely superior to Pannepeut. Much more complex and flavorful beer IMO.
I know that the spice additions are different. Other than that I think they're very similar. Pannepeut is a fantastic beer, but I still choose Pannepot over it most of the time. The spice controls the universe.
This is incorrect. Other posters have covered the main difference which is the addition of spices. Urbain explained this in detail in the old forum. I believe Pannepeut was originally brewed for a Dutch festival and was well recieved (what Struise beer isn't ) so it's been brewed annually. Thanks to a generous BA I've got a vertical of Pannepeut 2006, 07, 09, 10, & 11 in the works may still try to hunt down a 2008 to complete it! Should be as awesome as the Pannepot vertical I did last year.
I am tasting the 2006 versions side by side and the Pannepot is by far superior. The Pannepeut is several shades lighter in color, less carbonated and slightly sweeter. The Pannepot has deeper and more complex dark fruit flavors. I have had both of these bottles in my cellar for a number of years now, though they were not bought at the same time so the handling prior to my purchase could account for some of the difference.
I think the Pannepeut is superior, it has a more etherical barley wine-ish mouthfeel and ages amazingly. I like Pannepot, but it's a bit too thick to my taste. Pannepeut is actually how Danish people pronounce it, so they changed the O with the danish vowel Ø. Pannepeut is phonetically how they pronounce Pannepot.
