WOW! That beer list is absolutely awesome!! I was also very impressed to see such a diversity of beer styles!

I would definitely need Hardcore Frank to wheelbarrow me out of the Beer Festival!

    Prost!

I gotta agree. I'm salivating at the beer list. Even if 1/2 of the beers that German brewers are trying, like IPAs, etc, suck, that still means 1/2 will rock. And the Danish beers! And the Scottish! I'm delirious with joy. I'll try to take notes on what I liked/hated and report back & take pics. The only good thing is that you get to try only 0.1L of each beer, giving me hope I won't be blind wasted before 4 pm. Also, Schneider and Sohn is premiering a new beer there this upcoming Saturday. It's gonna be hard work, I know, but I'm up for it.

Tony, I hope that you fare better than I did at the Belgium Comes to Cooperstown (NY) beer festival:

Permit me to tell a story. My wife took me to Belgium Comes to Cooperstown beer festival (Ommegang Brewery) a number of years ago as a birthday present. We stayed at a bed & breakfast and the owner was an older lady who used to be an opera singer from the nearby Glimmerglass Opera Company. I kept teasing my wife to ask the old lady if she had a wheelbarrow (so my wife could take me home after the beer festival). They gave up sampling glasses and I had many, many 2 ounce + pours.

I wore a Crazy T-shirt company T-shirt that was dyed in beer and it has the logo of North Shore Brewing Company (I got the T-shirt in Hawaii). The next day my wife asked if I remembered the other guy who had the same T-shirt as me. I replied: What!?! It turns out that at the end of the beer festival my wife and I were sitting on a bench in the Ommegang Brewery’s breezeway and across from us was another couple (a wife and her husband wearing my T-shirt) also sitting on a bench. The conversation (allegedly) went something like this:

Other woman: We should take a picture with the two guys together!

My wife: I can’t move my man, can you move your man?

    Other woman: No

There was no picture taken of me and the other guy.

    Cheers!

P.S. I really don’t know whether the part of the story about the attempt to take a picture is true. I have absolutely no recollection of that!

3:30 am or pm? I think there's a talk given by Schneider Weisse (and the possible release of their new beer) between 4 & 5 pm on Saturday and other talks I might catch, so I'll try really hard to sober up by then. This BrauKunst Live! might really be the launching point for craft beer in Germany, I hope.

My strong recommendation: bring a tape recorder with you! That way you can ‘remember’ the talks later.

    Cheers!

The Gregorius will be there! That is the "new Trappist" beer. An official Trappist brewery in Austria was given the OK to brew...a year ago?...and released their Trippel. I think it's the only beer they brew. Been meaning to get my hands on that one...

As always, looking forward to your report!

My "Spezial" delivery has arrived, I will be drinking well this week!

My top-down shots of the case didn't turn out particularly well, so you'll just have to imagine 20 of these in said box.

    Cheers all!

Okay -- that's freaking overwhelming. I'd probably sit in a corner and whimper, not knowing where to start. :grimacing:

Did you see the world class beers on that list???!!! On top of that, there are LOTS of interesting looking beers, now whether they're good or not, that's another question. Nonetheless, I'm willing to try them!

This is German beer culture needs and it's only the second attempt at this kind of fest. What the industry needs to see is success in making great quality beers and being innovative. Again, it's a start.

I had the good opportunity to go to the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, WI a few years ago. It's every beer geek's dream. That said, I would probably not go back again, it was just too overwhelming in the choices available and time to taste; one afternoon.

On the other hand, this fest in Munich is 3 days long...

Unfortunately, I can only give one day, my Saturday, to the Braukunst Live! I've made train reservations for near noon on Sunday, need to get brain prepared to work again on Monday.

But... there's always the Köln festival in May, Festival der Bierkultur, which will be #5 and smaller. The best thing about Braukunst Live! is that it's supported by the big boys, the big beer trade associations, and that's led the heavy hitters from around the world to attend like Sierra Nevada and de Molen. I'm more worried pacing my sobriety and money.

I found Spezieal Rauchbier to be the best of the Rauchbiers in all of Bamberg. Agreed? And I'm jealous, too.

Well, no I can't go that far. I will say that my wife prefers it to Schlenkerla, but I am the other way around. She has better taste in foodstuffs, though. She has a properly refined palate and I do things like drink Oettinger.

That's not to say I don't like the Spezial, it's great and I'd happily drink it any day (I'll get a review up here one day this week), but my preference is to the Schlenkerla. And I'd say I prefer the Fastenbier, Urbock, and Dopplebock from Schenkerla as well, if I'm allowed to include those in the conversation.

Sometimes I will come to appreciate a beer more by the end of the case, so who knows, this beer may climb even higher in my esteem. It's definitely my favorite tonight, however, because it is in my fridge and all those other beers are not.

I think so, but I know some others (Herrburgess for one) disagree. The milder smoke and darker malts really speak to my palate a bit better than the Schlenkerla one. When paired with their jagerschnitzel, it made for one the best meals I've had in Germany. Can't say I've tried any other native rauchbiers, though.

I still love Spezial Rauchbier. Would gladly drink it everyday if I had the opportunity. Matter of fact, when I was in Bamberg with my Northern German in-laws, we spent much more time at the Spezikeller than at Schlenkerla. I tried taking them there on our first day in town, and while everyone loved the food, they could hardly stand Schlenkerla's Rauchbier. On our final night, I insisted we go back to Schlenkerla. After a week of acclimating themselves to Spezial Rauchbier, they tried Schlenkerla. Funnily enough, most agreed it tasted better. Again, I could drink either for the rest of my life and be happy. But there's something about Schlenkerla's underlying Maerzen base beer that, once you get past the smoke, is absolutely sublime and, as Michael Jackson said, "a world classic not only among beers, but among all alcoholic drinks."

I could probably only make an assessment on location. The Spezial we get in the middle of the continent often sits on shelves too long to give the best comparison to others.

However, remembering my wanderings through Bamberg I don't think I was disappointed anywhere!
