With PM just recently released by Central Waters and the KBS release coming up at the end of the month, I decided to do a side by side with these two tonight. They're definitely two different beers (the 8.5% vs. 11.2% abv will tell ya that), but I'd still be interested to hear who prefers which.

While I think both are fantastic, my palate gives the slight edge to Peruvian Morning. We are damn lucky to have them both in the Great Lakes region.

This year's PM wins by quite a bit in my mind. Crazy good.

all other things being equal KBS is a bit better. but the face that PM is much easier to find and cheaper so that i can enjoy it much more often makes it the winner in my book.

KBS is an all-time favorite of mine, but I have to say that at $11.99 or $14.99 (the two price points here in Chicago), Peruvian Morning is an epic steal.

And this year KBS gets points subtracted in my book for their lame-er labeling ("A Flavored Stout" - eh just seems to cheapen it for some reason for me) while Central Waters improved their Peruvian Morning label.

I actually prefer the old PM label with Machu Picchu in the background. The other CW labels are a dramatic improvement.

I know KBS has coffee but is it a coffee blended stout like Peruvian? I think a closer comparison would be bourbon county coffee.

What does everyone you mean by coffee blended stout? Peruvian Morning is aged with coffee in the bourbon barrel, straight from the mouth of Paul.

I assumed since it was so coffee forward it was more like coffee bourbon county, where its blended with coffee when bottled. KBS's subtle coffee leads me to believe its barrel aged with the beer, but again that's all perception.

I have to go with Peruvian Morning, the price point and availability actually make it attainable to the everyday consumer. This year's PM was also well balanced and a little more subtle with creamy vanilla notes and a coffee roast that didn't overpower every other aspect of the beer. Trying to obtain KBS every year becomes harder and harder with bottle limits often being one, last year I had to pay 9 bucks for one bottle which is just gouging at its finest. I think KBS just gets the edge most of the time because it has been a front-runner for many years. Fresh KBS is boozy and a bit hot with a coffee roast that doesn't seem to balance out until it ages.

also if this is a taste/preference debate why is there so much discussion on availability and price point?

I suppose there weren't a whole lot of rules setting up this discussion.

Personally, Peruvian Morning's good, a bit too boozy though and I don't get a ton of coffee from it compared to FBS or KBS. Doesn't mean I won't drink/buy it, but if someone put a bottle of PM and a bottle of KBS and told me I could only choose one and that would be it for the month (for either beer), I'll take the KBS and run.

oh right, I dont see any rules hahahahaha. I'm just mystified anyone would suggest Peruvian morning is better then KBS; different strokes for different folks.

2012 kbs > 2013 peruvian > all other vintages of kbs i've had > infected PM

if i had more sample points i'd add them.

I completely agree with this. I find it very boozy and thin with a ton of bottle variation in terms of coffee flavor. I've had one awesome coffee bomb and three I could have swore we're just the BBS. Great beer either way but the bottle variation has really lowered my opinion on it.

Wow this is interesting. I've only had it once this year from the bottle and a couple of times on draft. Bottle consistency is pretty important to me so if that's true that's no bueno.

Yea, there are no rules at all. KBS is a bit closer in %abv to PM than BCBCS... that and the fact they're both 12oz bottles is the reason for comparison. Bourbon County Coffee is in a world all it's own for me.

I honestly think they're both fantastic beers, but if, like Stevedore, someone put the two bottles in front of me (and I wasn't considering rarity at all) I'd probably choose PM. To each his/her own is right!
