B/c you're so thirsty after saying all that, so whatever you drink will taste wonderful, right?

Speaking of drinking, I'll get to Stahlsturm's stash after I get back from the Braukunst Live! Next week I'll be less busy. Wish me lots of stamina and quick sobriety this weekend in München.

“Wish me lots of stamina and quick sobriety this weekend in München.” Good luck!

And remember to drink lots and lots of water! You really can’t drink too much water at events such as this.

    Prost!

    I'm taking the night train. It's leaves FfM @ 1 am-ish, arrives in MH @ 7 am-ish.
    Opening times: 09.03.2013: 14.00-22.00 Uhr

Don't know what we're gonna do till 2 pm! I'm not terribly interested in going to the typical tourie beer joints in MH, and you can eat breakfast & lunch for only so long. Maybe a nice park bench will be a good place to nap?

I couldn't wait to break into the stash Stahlsturm brought.

My first one of 22 different beers (!) is Planck Bier's Dunkeler Weizenbock. I quote the website for this beer:
It also says it won the Gold in the World Beer Cup in 2004. That's impressive.

The back of the bottle mentions balanced bitterness for an "enjoyment beyond the hectic [of daily life]."
Not impressed with the marketing, ditto with the website.
Ok... aroma is as marketing promised: banana, bubblegum with hints of aroma hiding inside. 7.8% ABV. The foam is vanilla, dirty white; beers color is cloudy dark, dark brown with red & amber tints.

    Flavor, not bad.

You get the sweetness of bubblegum with some banana but also lots of deep roasted malts in the back. At first, I get the typical Weizen flavor, the super-duper sweetness of the Weizen yeast, but it's far more complex than that. I get black or chocolate malts, some coffee hints with full on Doppelbock-ness of the malt, maybe roasted barley. It's highly roasted, whatever the malt. If you let the beer bypass the front of your tongue, you taste the roasted barley full on. Bitterness is there, not pronounced, but noticeable in the very back of the tongue. I find it's a shame the Weizen yeast is so overpowering, for it almost masks these wonderful flavors. I'm not a huge fan of the bubblegummy Wiezens, I prefer a Kristalweizen with more lemony notes, but this one is not bad at all.

As a comparison, last night I drank a Allgäuer Büble Bier Edelweissbier, which also makes the Altenmünster group of beers, which belongs all belong to our beloved Radeburger Gruppe .
The above Büble Weissbier was only bubblegum & bananas & not much else, so I really appreciate the complexity of Planck's Dunkler Weizenbock. Nonetheless, to get me to drink this style of beer, you might have to chain me to the sofa first. :stuck_out_tongue: But if it's gotta be Weissbier, I'll take this one over all the rest for it's deep roasted flavors that it offers to help forget the bubblegummy.

“Maybe a nice park bench will be a good place to nap?” You might want to claim dibs on that bench; you might be right back on it at 22.00 Uhr.

    Cheers!

boddhitree, have you ever had any of the Kuchlbauer weiss beers (Abensberg)?
If you like the roasted malt flavors in your weiss beers, I think Kuchlbauer would please you. I have yet to try a weiss beer with a more roasted malt flavor than Kuchlbauer's dark weiss. I am gonna search out that Plank beer you reviewed when I'm in the Regensburg area come May!

Call Stahlsturm when you get into town. Invite him to go on a tour of Spaten with you. By the time he is done swearing at you it should be 14:00.

Again, no tourie places, God no. I'm sure I can find lots of better places without tourist.

All this talk of deutsche Biere has caused me to seek out a Fleischwolf (meat grinder), Pökelsalz (curing salt) and motivated me to make a 3-4 lb. batch of Leberkäse, which I have never done before in my life. I would like to share with our group of local Germans, we'll see if my creation looks edible. Pics to follow, give me a few days to find recipes online and actually create this monster... the good news: I have both Löwensenf and Bautzner mustard already in my possession.

Nice! Question: Are Fleischkäse and Leberkäse the same thing? I think Fleischkäse is pretty great street food.

Yes, to my knowledge just different names.

Which reminds me, a butcher in my area always made "Pizzaleberkäse" on Fridays, adding oregano, green bell pepper, onions and chunks of pepperoni & cheese to the meat mass - I am already drooling...

Just "revisited" Pizzaleberkaes on my last trip to Bamberg...little hole in the wall butcher in the Lugbank between Judenstrasse (where my dorm was) and Schlenkerla. Yes, it's still as good as I remember. And an excellent accompaniment to a couple of mid-morning Rauchbiers.

Schneider is too unknown to tourists, HB is right around the corner so that gets the crowds. Schneiderhaus would be a great choice -- just that the beer may be too tempting!

This is considered torture by German BAs and NATO alike.
